Watching the haunting final scene where Lecter blends into a crowd in an unfamiliar land after speaking with Clarice for what seemed like a tender farewell, I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was now free to continue his grotesque acts of cannibalism without restraint. If Demme had chosen to keep Lecter’s heartfelt monologue within the confines of his prison cell, the movie’s conclusion would have carried a very different tone.
