In a fascinating disclosure, star William Zabka of the popular series Cobra Kai shared insights about the initial concept for the project. At first, the idea was more limited, primarily focusing on Johnny Lawrence (Zabka) and his redemption journey. However, thanks to Zabka’s astute questioning, the scope expanded significantly: “Well, you can’t just go make a Karate Kid movie without making sure everyone is involved.
The martial arts comedy spin-off, “Cobra Kai,” concluded with its sixth season, providing a fitting conclusion to Johnny Lawrence’s storyline. Although additional characters like Daniel LaRusso and John Kreese were eventually introduced, the show primarily revolved around the journey of Johnny.
The actor shared his thoughts with The Hollywood Reporter, discussing the origins of the project. It all began when showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg requested a gathering to propose an idea centered around Johnny Lawrence.
In the conversation, they invited me for a meeting to discuss the idea of reviving “Cobra Kai,” and I was clueless about the content of the pitch. They hinted that there could be something intriguing for me, starting with the character Johnny Lawrence, and I simply agreed. The storyline was presented as a redemption tale for Johnny, but with a gruff personality, and he would reopen Cobra Kai. My initial reaction was, “Really? Why would he return to Cobra Kai?” So they explained it as a journey of redemption, but I didn’t have a complete or crystal-clear understanding of the details surrounding his transformation.
In a recent disclosure, Zabka shared that Sony Pictures was open to the spin-off idea and revisiting the characters. However, his initial response was to inquire about the involvement of other cast members, particularly Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso. He expressed, “My first thought was, ‘You can’t just make a Karate Kid movie without ensuring everyone is involved; we need Ralph [Macchio].’ I left that meeting feeling positive and hopeful. I felt at ease, believing something good was in the works.” Following this, Zabka reached out to his close friend Macchio for discussion on the matter.
The day after our conversation about another potential project, I messaged Ralph, “It seems we might have to postpone our call; some individuals are planning to visit you.” Ralph responded by suggesting we pause and scrutinize the situation more closely. Thus, we proceeded cautiously as we waited for more information.
In essence, I had a strong sense of confidence due to their fondness for Johnny Lawrence and their plans for him… Ralph and I both believe we made a shrewd decision in agreeing.
Despite “Cobra Kai” wrapping up, William Zabka hasn’t lost his enthusiasm for the series, nor for Johnny Lawrence or any other aspects of “The Karate Kid”. When asked about his future plans, he expresses them as follows:

(William Zabka) – I’m excited to see what comes next. There are some projects in the works that I can’t talk about yet, but I think people will be really happy with them. I’m also just enjoying spending time with my family and friends right now. But who knows? Maybe something else will come along that I’ll want to be a part of.

Currently, I’m absolutely elated about where I am, and I’m not giving much thought to what lies ahead. I’m keeping an open mind and embracing whatever comes my way. To be honest, I’m overjoyed at the opportunity to portray this character and develop as both an actor and a producer for this show. Directing is definitely part of my future, along with acting and producing. But for now, it’s all about Cobra Kai! Cobra Kai will never fade away!
The Redemption of ‘Cobra Kai’s Johnny Lawrence
In simpler terms, the finale of “Cobra Kai” was a satisfying wrap-up, filled with both intense fights (since it’s a martial arts series) and emotional moments. It clearly showcased the impact of the franchise and how the TV show gave more depth to characters who were less developed in the movies. Additionally, it never strayed from its main focus. At heart, “Cobra Kai” is about Johnny Lawrence’s journey towards redemption after losing to LaRusso in the All-Valley Karate Championship. As actor Ralph Macchio said, Johnny’s story of redemption was central to the entire run of “Cobra Kai”.
The main theme of the show revolves around mentors and teachers, specifically who influences you and who you identify with. Unfortunately, Johnny had a difficult upbringing as he grew up without a father figure. He crossed paths with John Kreese, who taught him Cobra Kai as he knew it, but later betrayed Johnny and attempted to choke him at the end of Karate Kid 2. This betrayal has deeply scarred Johnny, and even after all these years, it continues to haunt him. The painful memory of this devastating loss, not just the trophy but his teacher, plunged him into a long period of despair.
During the entire performance, the anguish within John Kreese is concealed so profoundly… He’s essentially a weary, aimless spirit, struggling to find his footing. Yet, he seems to discover some semblance of direction through LaRusso and Carmen, through Miguel and his own son, striving for self-improvement. However, the pain within him remains John Kreese. In this journey, John Kreese has been on a path to redemption, ready to confront his past.
They synchronize their encounters, having developed a shared moment that’s unadulterated, much like John Kreese prior to Vietnam and Johnny Lawrence before the crane kick. They share their feelings with each other and reconcile. It’s heart-wrenching watching this unfold in the hallway. However, the scene afterward is beautiful when Johnny emerges from the tunnel alongside Miguel and Tory, with Kreese in the stands. Johnny acknowledges him with a graceful bow; they’ve resolved their differences. At that moment, Johnny finds freedom, and to some extent, the father-son relationship mends, paving the way for his complete redemption.
