Glancing at Longvinter, it’s challenging not to link the game with Nintendo’s renowned Animal Crossing series due to its character design and town-building aspects that appear to be modeled after it. However, what sets this game apart is the inclusion of gunplay, which allows players to engage in combat with others, thus transforming it into a distinct gaming experience.
Upon watching the trailer for this game, it’s hard not to notice the striking resemblance to Nintendo’s well-known series. While there are no anthropomorphic animals constructing homes in this one, humans appear to have taken their place instead. However, the similar visual style certainly makes for an attractive addition to Steam, despite being a spin-off from an established franchise.
It might seem plausible to think that Longvinter’s developers drew inspiration from Palworld and decided to create Animal Crossing with firearms, but this oversimplifies the situation. Given that Longvinter has been in development for three years, it’s possible that they were unaware of Pocket Pawn while working on their unique survival game.
At minimum, there are now additional choices for individuals who desire to engage with this enduring franchise on a device other than a Nintendo Switch.
It’s important that Uuvana Studios can provide substantial proof that their game isn’t a copy of Animal Crossing, as we believe unique small-scale games like this should thrive, provided they offer quality content. However, Nintendo has a history of being protective, so it’s crucial the developers present their case accurately to avoid any potential backlash. After all, The Pokémon Company took legal action against Pocket Pair over Palworld, so Uuvana Studios needs to be careful with their narrative.
As a gamer, I can’t help but find myself drawn to Longvinter, even if its creators have their own motives. The quirky Villager-like characters building homes and engaging in gunfights is an intriguing mix that’s sure to captivate a certain crowd. The resource war aspect introduces a layer of tension, making the resource gathering mechanic all the more engaging.
Fans can check out Longvinter on Steam, with a PS5 release coming in 2026.
