Currently, the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains the largest movie franchise in Hollywood. However, it’s not contentious to acknowledge that the MCU has faced challenges in finding its bearings following Avengers: Endgame. Fans who have followed the Marvel films for years are aware that there have been a few notable triumphs, such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Deadpool & Wolverine, but many recent MCU productions have faced difficulties. Now, a former Marvel comic writer is advocating for the resignation of Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios.
Rob Liefeld, renowned for co-creating Deadpool, has had a contentious separation from Marvel Comics, allegedly due to perceived disregard from Kevin Feige and other members of Marvel Studios. In a tweet, Liefeld criticized Feige, suggesting that the decreased box office earnings in the second week of Captain America: New World Order indicate that Feige’s streak of success has come to an end. According to Liefeld…
Get Feige off the mound. He’s spent.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I must admit that the gradual decline in box office earnings for “Brave New World” has caught my attention. Although it made an impressive debut, raking in almost $200 million worldwide, the film saw a staggering 70% drop in its second weekend and is now hovering around a global total of under $300 million. Granted, this isn’t the most significant second-weekend dip we’ve seen from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s certainly noteworthy.
Although the latest Captain America film didn’t break box office records, it might be a stretch to describe Kevin Feige as “exhausted” due to this outcome. In essence, the new movie marks the beginning of a fresh franchise with Anthony Mackie stepping into the role of Captain America. Interestingly enough, when adjusted for inflation, the box office performance of the latest film is not significantly different from that of Captain America: The First Avenger.
It’s common knowledge that Marvel Studios faced some challenges during their previous leadership. Disney CEO Bob Iger has admitted that, under former CEO Bob Chapek, the franchise may have spread itself too thin. During this period, the film Brave New World was given the go-ahead. It was already understood internally that the movie had problems, as it required more extensive reshoots than many blockbuster films typically do.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but appreciate the improvements those reshoots brought to “Captain America: Brave New World.” However, as a pragmatist, I understand that these additional scenes came at a cost – an increase in the movie’s budget. This means that for Disney to consider it a success, the film would need to perform exceptionally well at the box office.
It’s likely still premature to think about Kevin Feige’s time at Marvel Studios coming to an end. Given his impressive body of work so far, it’s clear that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has many more success stories ahead.
