Rumors about the cancellation of “Doctor Who” by the BBC have been debunked by the broadcaster themselves, but it’s hard not to be curious after an odd promotional video seemingly disclosed the release date for the new season as April 12, 2025. However, there was no official statement from Ncuti Gatwa (the Doctor), Russell T Davies (showrunner), or even the official “Doctor Who” account on various platforms. In fact, this information was casually dropped during – surprisingly – a random rugby match, with no announcement or fanfare whatsoever.
According to The Independent, the announcement was made on February 21st, during the BBC’s broadcast of the U20s Six Nations Rugby match between England and Scotland. The teaser (shown below) starts with the phrase, “There are powers beyond our universe.” It then shows footage of what’s to come in the upcoming season, such as a glimpse at the Dalek’s homeworld. The narration continues, “It’s all just a game to them, but these games are deadly.” The 15th Doctor, played by Gatwa, and his companion Millie Gibson are both returning, while Varada Sethu is also featured as a new companion. Some viewers were left puzzled about the BBC’s decision to air this promo during a rugby match.
An unusual setting for such a significant reveal,” said one person on social media, suggesting that it’s surprising where these two very distinct fan groups would intersect. Scott Bryan, a journalist, commented by saying, “This seems like an unlikely spot.” Another individual succinctly put it this way: “Indeed, it’s not a typical Venn diagram intersection.
As a movie enthusiast, I find it amusing to share an unexpected revelation: the announcement of the next season wasn’t made by the BBC itself, any of Doctor Who’s official social media channels, our beloved Doctor, or even the showrunner. Instead, it was a trailer during a seemingly unrelated rugby match that broke the news!
The BBC Insists ‘Doctor Who’ Is Not Being Canceled
As a dedicated Whovian, I can’t help but express my concern over recent rumors circulating about the fate of “Doctor Who.” Last week, reports emerged suggesting that the show might be on the brink of cancellation due to subpar ratings and mismanagement. However, I was relieved to hear a clarification from the BBC itself, stating unequivocally:
“Contrary to some reports, Doctor Who has not been put on hold.”
They further added that these stories were unfounded, offering a breath of fresh air to fans like me who are eagerly awaiting the next season.
Previously mentioned, the verdict about season 3 will follow the conclusion of season 2. Our agreement with Disney+ encompasses 26 episodes in total, and at present, half of those episodes are yet to be aired. Regarding any further details about the Doctor and future storylines, we don’t typically discuss those matters.
If the claim is true that the announcement about the next season air date was made during a rugby match, it’s puzzling as to why this decision was made, given that most Doctor Who fans don’t follow rugby. Additionally, the lack of an official announcement on social media adds to the suspicion. However, until the BBC provides clarification, we can only assume Doctor Who will continue at least through the next season. You can currently stream the latest episodes on Disney+, and all past modern era episodes are available now on Max.
