On Monday, a judge declined to provide the Associated Press with entry to the White House press group, marking two weeks since the administration barred the news organization due to disagreements regarding the re-naming of the Gulf of Mexico.
Trump-appointed judge Trevor McFadden refused the Associated Press’s request for a preliminary injunction, asserting that the AP had failed to show they were experiencing “un repairable damage.
Approximately two weeks ago, the White House started excluding Associated Press (AP) reporters from participating in events held in the Oval Office and the East Room, as a response to AP’s decision not to use President Trump’s recently proposed name for the Gulf of Mexico, “Gulf of America.” On February 11th, the AP filed a lawsuit against White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, and Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich, claiming that this ban infringed upon their First Amendment rights.
Although McFadden made a decision on Monday, the judge mentioned he will examine a request for a temporary restraining order and suggested the Trump administration re-evaluate their stance. McFadden stated that case law in this jurisdiction has consistently been unfavorable to the White House, and the administration’s selection of a specific organization as a target could potentially raise questions.
According to the initial complaint, on February 18, Wiles wrote an email to the AP stating that their attention was specifically directed towards the AP due to the fact that their Stylebook is widely utilized as a benchmark for writing and editing. The email concluded with Wiles expressing optimism that the term related to the Gulf would be accurately represented in the Stylebook when it comes to American audiences.
According to their policy, the Associated Press will use the original name of the Gulf of Mexico, while also acknowledging the alternative name chosen by President Trump. As a global news agency that shares news worldwide, it’s crucial for them to ensure that place names and geographical terms are easily identifiable for all audiences.
