The Academy Awards have chosen wisely by confirming that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo will perform at the 2025 Oscars broadcast. Given the massive success of the musical adaptation this year, it wouldn’t be surprising or smart to exclude them from a performance. However, with the recent announcement that no songs from the Best Original Song nominees would be performed as a tribute to Los Angeles following the wildfires, some were concerned that all performances might be scrapped (entirely).
Luckily, we can anticipate that at least two of the movie’s leading actors will be dancing their way through the performance on stage at some point during the show. As of now, it remains undecided which song the duo will choose to perform, but “Defying Gravity” and “What Is This Feeling?” are strong possibilities. We’re leaning towards “What Is This Feeling?” because it’s more entertaining, and there’s simply more for them to engage with in the song—though we wouldn’t rule out “Defying Gravity,” given its iconic final note that people often adore. Furthermore, the Oscars have announced (through a press release) that Doja Cat, Blackpink’s Lisa, Raye, and Queen Latifah will also be performing, but we’re yet to find out which songs they will be singing!
The Oscars Cut Back On Performances During The Broadcast: Good Or Bad?
It’s well-known that the network broadcasting the Oscars typically doesn’t attract a massive audience. Regardless of who attends, a three-hour awards ceremony honoring many films that most viewers haven’t watched can be difficult to appeal to the typical TV spectator. This is particularly challenging in the era of social media, where people often watch highlights, memorable moments, and memes about the event after it has occurred.
It’s indisputable that sometimes those shows can be incredibly enjoyable, as exemplified by Ryan Gosling’s performance of “I’m Just Ken” last year alongside his troop of Barbie Kens. Honestly, it was one of the finest and funniest instances in a year filled with memorable Barbie moments. If not for the inclusion of Best Original Song performances, we would have regrettably missed out on that delightful experience, which would have been a real shame.
It’s important to mention that the musical “Wicked” isn’t eligible for any awards in the Best Original Song category because all their songs were derived from the Broadway production. This actually benefits us, the audience, since we won’t have to endure any potential discomfort that might arise if a live performance by someone like Emilia Pérez was involved. Instead, the Academy has chosen to honor the nominees in this category by sharing personal insights from the teams who create these songs, providing a deeper understanding of their origins and inspirations. This will be part of an extensive celebration of this year’s nominees.
It is debatable whether the Oscars have improved overall, but it is certain that for this year’s event, there have been positive changes made.
