‘Lynley’ Returns: New Twists, Social Issues, and a Dynamic Duo

The upcoming TV series titled “Lynley,” an adaptation of Elizabeth George’s popular novels featuring an unorthodox detective duo, aims to create a worldwide impact. Starring Leo Suter from “Vikings: Valhalla” and Sofia Barclay from “Ted Lasso,” the show follows the dynamic partnership between DI Tommy Lynley and DS Barbara Havers in the four-episode production by Colin Callender’s company, Playground (responsible for shows like “Wolf Hall” and “All Creatures Great and Small”). The creative team and executives have high hopes that this series could establish a new franchise.

I’m thrilled to share that one of BBC Studios’ flagship scripted series, a fresh take on a beloved global intellectual property, is being unveiled at this year’s BBC Studios Showcase in London. This riveting crime drama combines intriguing whodunnits with thought-provoking investigations into societal issues such as class disparities, prejudices, office politics, and identity. It’s been designed to resonate not just with British viewers, but with audiences worldwide, thanks to its cinematic aesthetic, quintessentially British elements, and universally relatable narratives.

The newest production by BBC Studios and Playground has been ordered by BritBox U.S., in partnership with the BBC, and filmed in Ireland. It features a talented ensemble cast that includes Daniel Mays (Magpie Murders), Niamh Walsh (The English Game), Michael Workeye (My Lady Jane), and Joshua Sher (Vera). BBC Studios is currently marketing the show globally.

The show, penned by Steve Thompson (“Vienna Blood”) and produced by him as well, brings back the characters Lynley and Havers to television screens, 17 years since the last episode of the BBC series “The Inspector Lynley Mysteries” aired. This series originally featured Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small, running for six seasons.

Tommy Lynley, an exceptionally skilled detective, finds himself as an outsider within the police force due to his aristocratic upbringing. He is partnered with Barbara Havers, a sergeant known for her unconventional ways and humble working-class background. Despite their contrasting personalities and social statuses, they form an unlikely alliance. Defying expectations, they develop into a powerful team, united by their shared passion for seeking justice.

In this TV series, the cast and crew behind the scenes refer to the portrayed police station as a miniature world reflecting diverse personal histories and life journeys. The main characters, notably, hail from contrasting social circles yet are unexpectedly paired up in what appears to be the cop version of a final resort.

Havers exhibits a greater eagerness and tends to rely on her instincts,” contrasting with Lynley, who is portrayed as coming from a more affluent background as evidenced by his possessions like clothes and cars. According to Suter, he’s an aristocrat, whereas Havers is of a working-class background and has had to work hard for her achievements. Despite their differences, they make an effective team and eventually form a strong friendship.

Lynley tends to be sociable, logical, and career-oriented, presenting himself in a reserved manner. As an actor, he explains, it’s part of an upper-class British tradition to appear less excitable. Overzealousness is considered impolite. Instead, one should maintain a cool demeanor, functioning at around 40 to 50 percent of one’s capacity. Calmness is key.

Barclay notes, “Lynley’s words may appear polite, but they don’t carry a polite demeanor in their essence. This series tackles universal themes and presents them through a distinctly British perspective, which I believe resonates with many. It serves as an intriguing microcosm.

Initially, the two main characters might not see eye to eye, but as Barclay explains to THR, “they are just what each character requires.” He likens them to a necessary remedy for both characters. “You’ll grow fond of them and witness their mutual respect blossom, in spite of their contrasting personalities,” he adds.

Essentially, Lynely presents both interpersonal relationships and their challenges, as well as intriguing criminal mysteries for the pair to unravel.

Producer Thompson acknowledged having read the previous Lynley series, but made a conscious effort not to rely on it or expect viewers to be familiar with it. As stated in an interview with THR, “We’ve chosen more recent books for adaptation. What we’ve created here is entirely independent.” This means that newcomers can jump right in without any prior knowledge required.

As a gamer diving back into the world of Lynley novels, I can’t help but feel the excitement of meeting old friends once more, but this time as strangers. The authors wisely decided that we shouldn’t take our prior knowledge for granted; instead, we should go back to basics and witness their first encounter. It’s a crucial moment, one filled with tension and uncertainty, knowing full well that things will go awry before they eventually smooth out.

George, an ardent admirer of British culture despite being an American, clearly expresses this affection in the series. As Barclay points out, “She’s essentially penned a love letter to it in numerous subtle ways.

Significantly, Thompson’s adaptation maintains a gradual unveiling of details throughout the narrative. As Barclay points out, “One of the strengths of this writing is that it doesn’t lay everything bare from the start. Instead, it subtly hints and suggests through the characters’ demeanor, dialogue, and what they choose not to say.” Moreover, she underscores that the characters’ interest in the law isn’t merely for amusement, but stems from deeply personal motivations, implying that their roles extend beyond professional obligations.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can relate this to an immersive RPG (Role Playing Game). Just like the best procedurals, these games offer weekly missions or cases. But what sets them apart is the intricate long-term storylines that keep you hooked. It’s as if we’re dropped into a world and left with breadcrumbs to follow, making us deeply invested in the characters. For me, it’s all about Lynley and Havers, their dynamic tension keeps me coming back week after week. From a creator’s standpoint, I want to build a franchise that my audience eagerly anticipates.

The bond between them grows as well. As Suter points out, “They tackle intricate, winding mysteries together, yet they also provide subtle assistance in each other’s personal journeys.

As a devoted admirer, I find myself intrigued by the deeper layers of the dynamic between Lynley and his superior, DCI Brian Nies, brilliantly played by Daniel Mays. Thompson insightfully points out that while Lynley may have risen through the ranks, he exudes an air of privilege that rubs off on Brian, stirring up feelings of resentment due to Brian’s long history of hard work in uniform.

As the team captured establishing shots in East Anglia, a region in Eastern England, the series was actually filmed in Ireland. Playground had prior experience with both the country and its talented crews due to previous projects. Moreover, as David Stern, co-managing director at Playground, explained, “Ireland offers an incredibly diverse range of landscapes and top-notch crews.” However, they also sent a location scout to explore East Anglia in detail, enabling them to find suitable locations in Ireland, so viewers wouldn’t comment on the differences between the real East Anglia and what they saw in the series.

Mark Linsey, the president of BBC Studios’ scripted division, emphasizes that Lynley encompasses all the vital components that contribute to a series being successful, and even more. He notes to The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s visually stunning and truly captivating. There are numerous aspects that draw you into the series. The mystery of ‘who done it’ is present, but so is the evolution of the characters’ relationships. You become invested, wanting to learn and witness more. Steve’s writing is exceptional, there’s the intriguing murder mystery element, and the exceptional casting. It’s challenging to get everything just right.

Barclay praises the depth and captivating layers within the characters of the series, noting that they keep both the cast and viewers hooked. “No character you meet is typical,” she clarifies. “Each one has something unique, intriguing, even mysterious. The fun lies in discovering these characters. And as an actor, playing any of them offers a wealth of backstory.

Suter points out that the characters in the series aren’t one-dimensional either. “One delightful aspect of this show is witnessing a character evolve and progress,” he notes. “Initially, Lynley is portrayed as an exceptional detective, but I believe he becomes even better over time. With each case they tackle, they refine their skills and discover what works best for them. Remarkably, the way Lynley perceives the world shifts throughout the four movies.

Barclay agrees wholeheartedly, stating, “There’s an extraordinary charm in observing individuals, each with their unique styles and strategies, being pushed out of their comfort zones, adapting, and learning to move harmoniously with others. I believe we all can be quite apprehensive at times, but it’s delightful to see people break free from that fear and show a bit more courage.

The chemistry between Suter and Barclay’s characters significantly enhances the show, stemming from their genuine off-screen camaraderie, cooperative spirit during production, and a deliberate effort by producers to assess their compatibility early in the casting process. As Barclay points out, this step is seldom taken in modern productions, but it plays a crucial role that often goes unnoticed. Having the right people come together not only ensures top-tier writing and a skilled crew, but also combines energies that complement each other effectively. I consider myself fortunate and grateful that the decision was made to invest extra effort in this area, as it resulted in Leo and me joining the project at the same time, which has undeniably added enjoyment to our shared experience. Explaining why certain energy combinations work well together can be challenging, but that’s what chemistry is all about.

Schildhouse comments: “Many police procedurals are being produced, and there’s an abundance of cherished intellectual properties. But how do we stand out from the competition? It’s essential to have a compelling story and care about the characters. In Lynley, you are hoping for this relationship to flourish.

Stern observes: “It’s not necessarily a given that two outstanding performers will mesh perfectly, even though each may excel individually. This isn’t related to their acting skills; it’s simply a matter of how well they click together. And the success of this show hinges on that chemistry.

Thompson found pleasure in re-watching the completed series, expressing to THR that “re-experiencing it reminded me how much the audience yearns to join them on their adventures. You feel like you want to tag along with them. Even though there’s a hint of conflict, the friendly banter makes it quite entertaining. They’re also skilled at what they do. If there was an additional member for the team, I’d secretly hope it could be me.

Suter and Barclay highly commend the outstanding creativity of their team and each other, expressing a special bond on-screen. “Working with Leo is just remarkable, and I must admit it sounds cliché, but it’s the truth,” remarks Barclay. “He’s so energetic, even when it comes to performing all these daring stunts. Filming days can be grueling and challenging, but it’s amazing to endure them with someone as brilliant as he is, who makes the process enjoyable because he’s always ready, and performs each action with such grace.

Suter chuckles, grins, and reciprocates the praise. “Sofia exudes such energy, kindness, and warmth,” he notes. “While we’re cruising in our vehicle, enjoying a quiet moment since there’s no director present, we get to rehearse certain scenes multiple times. It’s truly enjoyable to do so with a friend and someone who supports you.

If the creative chemistry resonates strongly with viewers as intended by the creators, it’s possible that Lynley and Havers could continue for additional seasons. Elizabeth George, who has been incredibly supportive, was impressed with the first episode, even expressing surprise at the reveal of the killer due to the exceptional writing, according to Stern. In essence, the plan is that this dynamic duo can sustain their momentum indefinitely.
