Located in Beijing, China’s primary hub for business and culture, a new structure has just been unveiled – the Capital International Exhibition & Convention Center (CIECC). This architectural marvel, created by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), is the latest addition to the city’s growth, catering to its increasing need to accommodate conventions, international conferences, and trade shows.
Positioned on Line 15 of Beijing’s metro system and in close proximity to the Capital International Airport, the main north-south axis of CIECC (China International Exhibition Center Complex) links its nine exhibition halls. This arrangement ensures clear navigation, offers great flexibility, and maximizes efficiency. Designed as interconnected “ribbons,” these facilities are seamlessly tied together. Bridges above a central open space also link the exhibition halls, conference center, and hotel, allowing for indoor travel between event spaces.
Or more concisely:
CIECC’s main north-south axis links its nine exhibition halls, ensuring easy navigation, flexibility, and efficiency. The design concept is “ribbons” that interconnect all new facilities. Bridges over a central courtyard connect the exhibition halls, conference center, and hotel for indoor travel between event spaces. It’s located on Beijing Subway Line 15 and near the airport.
The design of the center’s architecture subtly blends industrial scale with fluid language, showcasing a folded, richly hued copper exterior adorned with expansive, setback windows. This balance aims to harmonize the CIECC’s significant industrial character and materiality. Notably, it boasts a combined roof system of symmetrical geometries, which forms an energy-efficient, lightweight structure offering spacious interiors without columns. These adaptable spaces can easily transform in response to alterations in exhibitions or usage.
As an enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the CIECC, where I’m a dedicated fan, employs smart building management systems. These systems combine optimal natural ventilation with advanced HVAC equipment for maximum energy efficiency, ensuring top-notch indoor air quality. Additionally, the center boasts rainwater collection across its expansive area, along with gray water recycling and photovoltaics – these features enable on-site energy production, contributing significantly to the center’s impressive achievement of the highest certification in China’s Green Building Program.
The recently revealed complex is Beijing’s biggest and most modern venue for exhibitions and conventions, extending the city’s current facilities to approximately 611,000 square meters. It includes nine additional exhibition halls, three new reception areas, a conference center capable of accommodating 9,000 attendees, and a hotel offering 410 rooms.
