By far, Spider-Man stands out as Marvel Comics’ most iconic and lucrative character. With his latest live-action portrayal set to take flight in his fourth solo movie within the MCU, Tom Holland reprising his role as Peter Parker, fans are speculating about a possible cameo by him in any upcoming New York-based Disney+ series – specifically, WandaVision and Hawkeye.
Recently, Marvel’s head honcho, Kevin Feige, has suggested that Marvel Studios is prepared to delve back into the realm of “gritty city” heroes such as Daredevil. Interestingly enough, this group also encompasses Spider-Man, given his role in safeguarding New York City. Previously, Feige stated:
We’re announcing that Daredevil and Spider-Man will be joining the roster of street-level superheroes.
The idea emerged among fans that these two superheroes could combine forces, possibly with actors like Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones and Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez/Echo from Netflix joining them. However, during a conversation with the Phase Hero podcast, Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum hinted that a collaboration between Daredevil and Spider-Man might not be feasible on television.
As a movie reviewer, I must admit that when asked about the prospect of Spider-Man gracing our screens on Disney+, I couldn’t give a definitive yes. While it would be thrilling to imagine Tom Holland’s web-slinging hero swinging by Matt Murdock’s neighborhood, the possibility remains uncertain for now.
I’m not completely certain about the specific regulations, but it seems that Sony might hold the extended TV broadcast rights. Whether or not this allows him to appear isn’t clear. However, you could potentially create a 30-minute animated series, I believe.
Certainly, it’s clear that Spider-Man, known as “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” is the one we’re counting on in this situation. For now, it appears that his appearances will be limited to streaming platforms like Disney+, making live-action movies outside of this platform the exception for fans wanting to see Spidey in action.
Spider-Man 4 Has Caused Conflict Between Marvel Studios and Sony
The partnership between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures has faced its share of challenges. A moment etched in the memory of every Marvel fan is when it appeared that the Spider-Man plan for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was about to fall apart, as Sony decided to end their collaboration due to disagreements over the financial aspects concerning the character’s usage. Nevertheless, these issues were ironed out and the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home followed suit.
After that point, it seems there’s been some tension once more regarding Spider-Man 4, as both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures appear to have different visions for the next installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man. According to sources in 2023, Marvel Studios is eager to bring Peter Parker back to street-level action following his multiverse journey, but Sony Pictures desires another grand, universe-shattering event. However, it remains unclear which direction the final decision might take, as Tom Holland has previously expressed his thoughts on reprising the role of Spider-Man. He stated:
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to be part of the team that aims to create something extraordinary, regardless of the storyline. However, we carry a rich legacy from our previous successes, especially the third film which was unique in numerous ways. Consequently, our aim is to ensure that everything we do aligns with the quality and impact of that movie. This is my first time being involved in the creative process so early on, and it’s an exciting journey for me as I observe and learn. It’s a fascinating stage, and I can’t wait to see where this process takes us. However, we’re all keenly aware of the importance of striking the right balance, avoiding any unnecessary embellishments.
