‘They Can Be A Real Nightmare’: James Gunn Gets Real About Post-Credits Scenes And Trouble He Faced With Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

Post-credit scenes, which are common in today’s blockbusters, often generate enthusiasm and speculation among fans. However, they also come with their disadvantages. For instance, there’s a risk that audiences may be left hanging for extended periods without resolution. Furthermore, these scenes can unintentionally set expectations that might restrict the creative freedom of filmmakers. James Gunn, who has had extensive experience with such teases within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is well-aware of this and is mindful of this as he guides the future of the DC Universe.

Last week, I had the opportunity to participate in a DC Studios presentation with James Gunn and Peter Safran, the heads of DC Studios, on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California. During the question-and-answer session, I asked the filmmakers about movies and shows hinting at future canon events, especially considering their method of production, which doesn’t rely on a strict release schedule but rather on ensuring the scripts are well-written first. When answering honestly, Gunn admitted that post-credit scenes can sometimes cause issues.

Regarding the surprises, such as those after the credits, they can sometimes cause quite a headache. I’ve found myself in situations where I’ve included post-credit scenes, and let me tell you, it’s not always clear-cut – like when I was working on Guardians 3, for instance. I wasn’t certain if Adam Warlock should be part of the story, but I made a commitment to the audience, so here we are!

In case some may have forgotten, James Gunn took things a step further with the additional end credit scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 compared to most Marvel films before it. Unlike other movies that usually had just one or two post-credit scenes, this sequel had an impressive five. The most intriguing among these was the hint that Ayesha was manufacturing a flawless being for the Sovereign – a creation she would name Adam.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it wasn’t explicitly confirmed that Adam Warlock would debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, director James Gunn implied a commitment by hinting at his character’s origin earlier. Feeling bound to this promise, he decided to include Adam Warlock in the sequel, with Will Poulter portraying him. Yet, during the film’s development, there were instances where Adam Warlock didn’t seamlessly fit into the narrative that Gunn wanted to weave.

While working on the script, adjustments occur, and I find myself thinking, “I see he’s fitting him quite snugly there.” I appreciate his presence in the film and the character, but it seemed to make the production a bit less refined in certain aspects. Therefore, I exercise caution when making such promises about what we can realistically achieve.

It’s clear that James Gunn’s new film, titled Superman, might not have end credits scenes, but it’s been made known that any hints about the future the movie offers were thoughtfully considered and carefully included in the final version of the movie, to avoid potential spoilers or misleading information.

Featuring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, and others, Superman’s grand entrance to the big screen is set for July 11. Rest assured that as it unfolds, we at TopMob will be delving into every clue about the potential impact on the DC Universe that it may bring.
