In 2023, the movie “Animal,” starring Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna, was released. This film was a box office success, but it faced heavy criticism from certain quarters for perceived depictions of violence and male dominance. More recently, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga has spoken out, acknowledging critics while also praising the actors’ performances.
A short preview for an interview coming soon, led by Komal Nahta, titled Game Changers, was recently unveiled. In this sneak peek, Sandeep Reddy Vanga, director of the film “Animal,” appeared as a guest, talking candidly about the industry bias he encountered following the debut of the movie starring Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna.
During our chat about my movie “Animal,” someone inquired about the film industry’s response. In reply, I expressed, “Let me tell you something interesting: The film community critiqued ‘Animal,’ but everyone seems to praise Ranbir’s performance, saying he’s knocked it out of the park. Now, I’m not envious of Ranbir’s success, but my question is this: If Ranbir delivered an exceptional performance, then what about the role of the writer and director in creating this masterpiece? I find it puzzling that there’s such a significant difference.
Vanga also noted that perhaps people choose not to criticize Ranbir due to his popularity, but because he’s still relatively new in the industry, it’s simpler for others to voice their opinions about him.
As he explains, a filmmaker typically produces a movie every 2.5 to 3 years, whereas an actor manages to star in around five films during that same timeframe.
People typically won’t criticize or talk negatively about someone they need to collaborate with.
Beyond what’s been said, I was once queried about whether I ever felt like a stranger within Bollywood, given my roots in the South. To this, I shared my thoughts: While some industry folks might harbor such sentiments regarding my films, I personally don’t subscribe to the idea of ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders.’ After all, cinema is a universal language that transcends geographical boundaries.
2023 saw the release of the movie “Animal,” starring Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol, Saurabh Sachdeva, and Anil Kapoor, along with others in significant roles. In exciting news, preparations are underway for a follow-up to Animal, which will be called “Animal Park” and is slated to arrive soon.
