Maybe the Best So Far

James Cameron, the visionary behind the ‘Avatar’ franchise, has recently previewed ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ to a select audience, and the early responses have been incredibly favorable. The third installment of the series is currently in post-production and is scheduled for release on December 19, 2025. While specific details are still kept under lock and key, Cameron has disclosed that this film will be the most emotionally intense yet. With his primary focus now on producing ‘Avatar’ sequels and enhancing the technology to make these films even more powerful, Cameron shared with Stuff (New Zealand outlet) that he has already shown ‘Avatar 3’, and the feedback has been as promising as anticipated.

I’ve shared it with a few chosen individuals, and their responses indicate that it’s undeniably the most emotional and potentially the best among the three presented thus far. Time will tell, but I’m quite optimistic about it. The acting performance is outstanding, and it evokes strong emotions in a positive manner.

The acclaimed director behind movies such as “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” “True Lies,” and “Titanic” intends to continue residing in New Zealand for the upcoming films in his series about an extraterrestrial civilization. Cameron has discovered that Wellington offers attractive tax incentives and a skilled workforce, stating, “We excel at advanced technology. The visual effects artists here are exceptional, world-class. In the past, it’s been shown to be reliable, respected, and I believe it’s a place worth investing in.” Cameron further added.

We currently have approximately a thousand employees working primarily in Wellington, and our plan is to continue with movies four and five from this location. To clarify, I am passionate about creating local jobs. In fact, we are transferring some staff from the US, and we will also be recruiting new team members.

So far, the “Avatar” series has been a significant force in cinema history, with its two movies raking in impressive box office numbers. Released in 2009, “Avatar” grossed approximately $2.9 billion, while “Avatar: The Way of Water,” released in 2022, earned over $2.3 billion at the box office.

James Cameron on the Use of AI in the ‘Avatar’ Franchise

According to ComingSoon’s report, James Cameron held a Q&A session in New Zealand where he shared some insights about “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” The original “Avatar” introduced us to an entirely new realm, while the sequel took over a decade to create due to various reasons, mainly because of Cameron’s meticulous vision. He won’t release a film unless it looks spectacular. Cameron’s bond with technology is almost mutualistic, and for the second “Avatar” movie, where water was crucial, he opted to wait for the suitable technology. The underwater sequences and all water-related scenes in “Avatar: The Way of Water” are nothing less than breathtaking. So, one can only imagine what he’s striving to accomplish with fire in the upcoming film.

As a passionate film buff, I found something intriguing during the Q&A session: Cameron expressed some thoughts on the topic of AI in art, which is quite divisive these days. Some argue that AI integration is unavoidable, while others strongly believe it has no place in cinema and TV productions. Regarding Cameron’s films, fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the director won’t rely on generative AI for his upcoming projects. In fact, he revealed that for Avatar 3, a title card will be included stating “no generative A.I. was used in the making of this movie.
