Numerous interpretations of Batman have emerged since the character was first introduced in 1939, but my personal favorite is the portrayal of the Dark Knight created by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski for the DC Animated Universe. The late Kevin Conroy brought this version of Bruce Wayne to life with remarkable depth, and on numerous occasions, he demonstrated himself as nothing short of a legend. Let’s explore more than 30 of his most defining moments.
Scarecrow’s Fear Toxin Is No Match For Batman’s Will
In “Nothing to Fear” from the animated series “Batman,” our protagonist encounters Scarecrow for the first time. Throughout this episode, Batman is affected by the villain’s fear gas and experiences hallucinations. However, by the end of their showdown, Batman manages to conquer his own fears. It’s during this battle that he delivers the famous quote, “I am vengeance… I am the night… I am BATMAN!” in a powerful display.

Batman Sits With Ace Until Her Death
A particularly impactful episode from the DCAU (DC Animated Universe) that I, along with many other fans, identify with, is “Justice League Unlimited’s” “Epilogue.” This episode depicts Batman being assigned a mission to kill psychic member Ace of the Royal Flush Gang, who has a terminal illness, using a unique weapon. However, instead of carrying out the task, he chooses mercy and spends time with her as she passes away. This act demonstrates not only Batman’s heroism but also his capacity for empathy and compassion.

Batman Sings “Am I Blue?” To Save Wonder Woman
Reminding us of “This Little Piggy” from the initial season of Justice League: Unlimited is no easy task, given that it’s when Wonder Woman gets turned into a pig by the vengeful Circe. Batman steps up to rescue his teammate, and in an unexpected turn of events, he sings “Am I Blue” to save Diana. Luckily, this unusual tactic works, and not only does he manage to restore Diana, but we also discover that Batman has a rather melodious voice.

Bruce Wayne Fights Kyodai Ken By The Side Of A Volcano
On Batman: The Animated Series, Bruce Wayne faces off against the cunning Kyodai Ken, an individual he trained with as a student under Yoru. Their second confrontation culminates in a final showdown atop Mount Kajiiki, where they exchange blows. In the end, Wayne wins, and Kyodai bows to him before apparently perishing among the fiery lava flows.

Batman Convinces His Justice Lord Counterpart To Switch Allegiances
In a two-part series titled “A Better World,” the vigilante and his Justice League comrades stumble upon an alternate universe. In this storyline, they encounter evil counterparts known as the Justice Lords who seek to conquer their world. Batman, however, is able to persuade his alternate self to aid the team in escaping by posing a question: “Would your parents be proud of the life choices you’ve made?

Dr. Destiny Can’t Top The Dark Knight’s Mental Strength
If you’re looking for evidence of Batman’s mental fortitude, I’d strongly recommend watching “Only A Dream” from Justice League. In this episode, the team encounters Doctor Destiny who can manipulate dreams. He successfully immobilizes most of the League, but here’s the kicker: he fails to penetrate Batman’s mind. This very resistance gives Batman the chance to imprison the villain in his own dreams.

Batman Risks His Life To Steer A Missile Off Course
In the “Doomsday Sanction” episode of “Justice League Unlimited,” the fearsome Doomsday resurfaces, causing General Eiling from Cadmus to retaliate by launching a nuclear-armed cruise missile with a Kryptonite warhead towards crime-plagued San Baquero. In a desperate move, Batman hijacks an aircraft (Javelin) and attaches it to the projectile, causing it to veer off course past the island. Though he manages to escape via an emergency pod, Batman sustains injuries.

Batman Dodges Darkseid’s Omega Beams
It’s tough to erase from memory the spectacle of Batman skillfully dodging Darkseid’s unpredictable omega beams, which weave and dart until they strike their mark. As even Darkseid, the tyrant of Apokolips, acknowledged in “Destroyer” from JLU, such a feat has never been achieved before, making Batman worthy not just of praise for pulling it off but also for eliciting a rare “impressive” from the Big Bad.

Bruce Wayne Easily Fights Off Jokerz In His 70s
In the world of Batman Beyond, despite being senior by the series’ timeline, Bruce Wayne remains an intimidating presence. This was evident from the beginning when he worked alongside Terry McGinnis to apprehend members of the Jokerz gang who had tracked him down to his estate in the pilot episode, “Rebirth.” Be cautious, for a man with a cane and years of experience is not someone to underestimate.

Batman Cleverly Escapes Riddler’s Death Trap
In “Riddler’s Reform,” one of Batman’s most formidable adversaries, the Riddler, almost claims the life of the Dark Knight by trapping him in a convention center with a bomb. Despite there appearing to be no escape routes, Batman manages to extricate himself. Not long after defeating the cunning villain, Bruce discloses that he had survived the explosion by hiding in a nearby safe. What makes this even more intriguing is that he doesn’t share his method of escape with the Riddler, who continues to question it during his confinement at Arkham Asylum.

Batman Taunts Rupert Thorne With A Weakened Bane
In the “Batman: The Animated Series” episode titled “Bane”, the resilient protagonist not only defeats the intimidating assassin but also rescues him from an overdose of poison. Among the standout BTAS episodes is “Almost Got ‘Im”, and there’s a solid explanation for its popularity. In this episode, Batman’s most formidable adversaries recount moments when they came close to defeating him. However, the unexpected turn at the end unveils that Batman was actually disguised as the villain Killer Croc, all part of a clever police operation to gather information. It’s a well-crafted episode with a satisfying finish.

Superman Is Chastised By Batman For Hesitating To Help Darkseid
In a surprising turn of events, even though few can reprimand Superman, Gotham’s foremost hero doesn’t shy away from scolding him when Darkseid seeks aid from the Justice League for defending Apokolips against Brainiac in “Twilight.” After detailing the wrongs committed by the villain towards Superman, Batman tells him bluntly to move on and offers a metaphorical shoulder to cry on.

Batman De-Orbits The Watchtower To Prevent The Thanagarian Invasion
In “Starcrossed,” the final episode of the Justice League series, our heroes battle to safeguard Earth from an onslaught by the Thanagarians. A crucial tool in their invasion was the Hyperspace Bypass Generator, a wormhole projector. In an unexpected move, the team chose to obliterate it using the Watchtower itself. What left everyone stunned was Batman’s brave decision to guide the base straight into the device with his own hands.

Batman Trolls Amanda Waller While Defending Long Shadow
In a more simplified and conversational tone: Cadmus’ Amanda Waller is known for not backing down from anyone, but Batman sometimes outsmarts her. When she and her armed allies attempt to seize the dying member of the Ultimen, Long Shadow, in the “Ultimatum” episode of Justice League Unlimited, Batman, Superman, and Aquaman protect him instead. Waller and her team retreat after Batman teasingly remarks, “Mine are bigger,” referring to their influence or resources.

In “Maid of Honor”, a trio of burglars break into S.T.A.R. Labs in the movie Justice League. One of these thieves, from Kaznia, mocks Batman during their encounter, claiming that Batman won’t understand him and won’t extract the information he desires because he is a Leaguer. However, to his surprise, Batman surprises the criminal by speaking his language, saying, “I can, and you will…” in response.

Bruce Wayne Risks His Life To Help Terry McGinnis Take Down Inque
The concept is detailed in the “Disappearing Inque” episode of Batman Beyond: As Bruce Wayne approached retirement from crime-fighting, he created a powered suit to enhance his stamina and power as he grew older. However, this armor strained his heart, yet even with the risk to his health, Bruce donned it once more to aid his protégé Terry in defeating the shape-shifting adversary Inque.

Batman Fights His Way Out Of The Mad Hatter’s Simulation
One of the best episodes from BTAS, titled ‘Perchance to Dream’, finds Bruce Wayne awakening in an ideal world where his parents remain alive. However, he soon discerns this reality isn’t genuine and employs his mental fortitude to battle, even defeating a delusion of Batman, in order to free himself from the Mad Hatter’s invention.

A Blind Batman Defeats The Penguin
In the animated series “Batman: The Animated Series,” the character known as the Dark Knight encounters a temporary loss of sight in an episode titled “Blind as a Bat.” Although he eventually employs a sensor aid, the device’s power unexpectedly shuts off during his fight with the Penguin. Upon Bruce’s discovery and attempt to halt the theft, Terry resists, but Bruce swiftly trips him to snap him out of the illusion.

The Immortal Ra’s al Ghul Is Defeated By Batman
In Batman: The Animated Series (BTAS), “The Demon Reborn” is where we’re introduced to Ra’s al Ghul for the first time. This two-part tale ends with an intense sword fight between Ra’s, the eternal fighter, and Batman, over a Lazarus Pit. When Batman hurls his sword to disrupt Ra’s explosive timer, the former stumbles. As Batman attempts to assist him, Ra’s comes to the realization that he has no other choice but to plunge himself into the pit.

Moving forward, the story in “Justice League” titled “Hereafter” stands out as one of the most powerful narratives, revolving around Superman’s apparent demise at the hands of his formidable foes. Despite Batman’s unwavering denial, he eventually acknowledges this loss and visits a memorial erected in Superman’s honor. It is here that he delivers a heartfelt eulogy encapsulating their unique bond.

Batman Confirms He Knows Flash’s Secret Identity While Revealing His Own
In the final episode of their series, titled “Starcrossed”, the Justice League encounters an invasion by the Thanagarians. As a result, they are compelled to hide and assume civilian attire. The Flash disapproves of his secret identity being exposed. However, Batman steps in, announcing that he has long known Wally West is the Flash, and also revealing his own as well as Superman’s identities to the team. This action demonstrates Batman’s exceptional detective abilities and his readiness to take decisive action during a crisis.

Future Bruce Wayne Shows His Younger Counterpart How To Interrogate Someone
In “The Once and Future Thing Part Two: Time, Warped,” the second installment of a thrilling time-travel tale by Justice League Unlimited, you’ll find the comeback of characters Terry McGinnis and future Bruce Wayne. The latter, as expected, continues to display his relentless nature, demonstrating it when he instructs his younger counterpart to step back, so he can teach him how to question a Jokerz member named Ghoul. Remarkably, in this instance, Batman imparts knowledge to another Batman.

Batman Proves Himself To Be A Loyal Friend To Harvey Dent
Prior to Harvey Dent transforming into Two-Face, he was once a close companion of Bruce Wayne. In the “Second Chance” episode of Batman: The Animated Series, Batman arranges Harvey’s transportation to a hospital for an operation that could restore his disfigured face. Although Batman makes every effort to keep Harvey from falling into darkness, the surgery doesn’t go ahead; however, the kindness he displays towards his ex-friend until the very end is truly admirable.

Batman Shows Arnold Stromwell The Error Of His Ways
In ‘It’s Never Too Late,’ Batman attempts to persuade an elderly mobster named Arnold Stromwell to abandon his criminal lifestyle. In “Harley’s Holiday” episode of Batman: The Animated Series, Harley Quinn is deemed sane and released from Arkham Asylum, leading to a whirlwind adventure where she desires a dress in a store, but things quickly turn chaotic. This wild journey ends with Batman and Robin returning her to Arkham, however, they show kindness by giving her the desired dress – which prompts Harley Quinn to give Batman a kiss.

Batman Intimidates Deadshot After His Teammates Couldn’t
It’s clear that Batman has the ability to instill deep fear in his enemies, as demonstrated when he confronted Deadshot after he attempted to kill Aquaman in the Justice League movie “The Enemy Below.” This alone is already impressive, but what makes it even more remarkable is that Superman and others found it difficult to unsettle this criminal.

Batman Saves Girl From Burning Building (With Some Help)
In a fiery apartment building, it’s Batman who bravely rushes in to rescue a young girl named Trina. He successfully retrieves her, but as the flames rapidly spread, their escape routes disintegrate.
