Broadway Box Office: ‘Buena Vista Social Club’ Starts Out Strong

Last week, the debut performances of the new musical “Buena Vista Social Club” took place at the Schoenfeld Theatre, filling every seat to full capacity.

The musical generated a total revenue of $447,171 during its three previews, with each ticket costing around $142.09 on average. Set to debut on March 19, this production is based on the real-life story of a group of elderly musicians in Cuba who are producing an album and reflecting on their past experiences.

Last weekend, I attended the closing night of “A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical” at Studio 54. This musical had its grand opening on Nov. 11, and it was a fantastic ride that came to an end on Feb. 23. During its final week, the show managed to earn $677,797, playing to almost 87% of its capacity. It was quite a memorable experience!

Overall, the total earnings dropped by 13% from the previous week. This decline is attributed to the closures of productions like Romeo+Juliet and All In: A Comedy About Love during that time, as well as a post-Presidents’ Day Weekend slump.

Last week, the box office earnings for “Gypsy” dropped nearly $600,000 as lead actress Audra McDonald was absent due to a prearranged schedule. The production earned $877,294 and filled 58% of seats at the Majestic Theatre.

Once again, “Wicked” led the box office earnings, raking in approximately $2.5 million. Close behind was “The Lion King,” earning $1.95 million. “Hamilton” followed suit with a take of around $1.9 million, while “The Outsiders” gathered $1.4 million and “Aladdin” brought in about $1.3 million.

So far this season, there’s been a nearly 18% increase compared to the previous one, and attendance has almost climbed by 17%.
