Contains spoilers for “NCIS” Season 22, Episode 13 — “Bad Blood”
In the 13th episode of Season 22 titled “Bad Blood,” character Tim McGee (Sean Murray) must confront and overcome some deep-seated anger in order to assist the NCIS team with a complex murder investigation. This anger stems from his intense dislike for Fletcher Voss (T.J. Thyne, famously known as Jack Hodgins from “Bones”), who had previously caused trouble for the team during their 1000th episode in Season 21.
Voss may not be perfect, but he’s as good as he gets right now, lending a hand to the team to solve the murder of an employee at his genetic company, Life Sequence. In classic NCIS fashion, this case leads to another, involving the drug-induced death of a Navy lieutenant who was attempting to halt a disturbance at a blood bank. Initially reluctant to collaborate with Voss, the team is reassured by his claim that he’s reformed following his three-month stint in prison.
In Season 21, Voss developed an app called Bandium, which his team used. This app was later implicated when it was believed to have aided a criminal in locating and shooting Leon Vance (played by Rocky Carroll) at his wife’s grave. However, further investigation revealed that Vance had actually been shot by a woman who had been influenced by Voss through an anonymous account on a social media site. Fearing that NCIS might terminate Bandium due to its financial struggles, Voss opted to sell the app for a substantial sum off-screen and avoid jail time. His intention was to protect Vance from harm. With the money he received, Voss launched Life Sequence. But this is just the beginning of Voss’s problems in “Bad Blood”.
Fletcher Voss turns over a new leaf — twice — for McGee
Initially, Fletcher Voss appears to be an ideal suspect in the murder of his employee. However, it’s later discovered that “Jane Doe” – Lauren Hawthorn – was pregnant by Voss despite his claims of ignorance. Given that having a relationship with Hawthorn would complicate Voss’ ongoing divorce proceedings, the motive becomes quite clear. Despite asserting his innocence, things don’t look favorable for him when the blood bank thief overdoses before the team can link him to Voss. During questioning about Lauren, Voss suffers a stroke in their presence.
It appears that the unusual clotting found in the collected sample is actually due to poisoning, not an overdose. The perpetrator, as it turns out, is Dr. James Donovan (Nick George), who has been secretly contaminating Voss’ smoothies during his employment under him for quite some time… and manipulating records at Life Sequence for personal gain and recognition. In a twist of events, Voss and McGee reach an understanding when McGee performs a blood transfusion on Voss to aid in his recovery from the near-fatal incident. They bond over their shared struggles, potentially paving the way for another unexpected appearance by Voss.
