- How Will ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Affect Upcoming MCU Films?
The movie titled “Captain America: Brave New World” premiered over Valentine’s Day weekend, and although critics have been rather harsh about it, audiences appear to have appreciated the new Marvel Cinematic Universe installment quite a bit. As per Rotten Tomatoes, the film’s Audience Score is at 80%, but its Critics’ Score stands significantly lower at 49%. The fourth movie revolving around the man with the shield, “Brave New World” sees Sam Wilson (played by Anthony Mackie) stepping into the role of Captain America following his successful thwarting of Karli (Erin Kellyman) and the Flag Smashers’ attempts, as depicted in the 2021 Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”.
In the movie, Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez) takes flight as Falcon and President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) transforms into Red Hulk, fueling their interconnected storylines. This cinematic journey underscores why Sam Wilson was destined to step into the shoes left by Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). Contrary to some opinions, Sam was the ideal candidate to wield the shield all along. As depicted in the film, Sam may not be identical to Steve Rogers, but he embodies the essence of Captain America. Although Brave New World might not be the best Captain America film, it certainly outshines the weakest entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Since the release of Avengers: Endgame in 2019, it’s been tough for new Marvel movies to maintain positive reception from audiences. Yes, there have been hits like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Deadpool & Wolverine, but the franchise hasn’t regained its former glory since Iron Man made his famous snap. Regrettably, it seems like the latest Captain America film is another casualty of the oversaturation in the MCU as it battles to perform well at the box office.
How Much Has ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Made at the Box Office?
Read Our Review
To turn a profit and break even with its production budget of $180 million, Brave New World needs to earn at least $425 million at the box office. At this point, it doesn’t seem like the movie is on track for success, but it’s not completely out of the running either. Interestingly, it maintained its top spot in theaters during its second weekend. However, ticket sales have significantly decreased compared to the film’s opening weekend. With a current global box office of nearly $290 million, the movie still needs an additional $135 million to turn a profit, which doesn’t look promising for the film’s financial future.
It appears that Brave New World is unlikely to achieve the box office success it needs due to its lackluster reviews and moderate audience turnout during its opening weekend. The movie’s disappointing reception may have discouraged others from going to see it, causing ticket sales to dwindle in the second week. As is typical for new releases, this downward trend seems inevitable. In today’s cinema landscape, the first weekend often sets the stage for a film’s success or failure. Although Brave New World might manage to maintain its pace over the coming weeks, an upward trend does not seem likely, particularly when compared to the numerous other movies set to hit theaters next month.
How Will ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Affect Upcoming MCU Films?
Despite Brave New World struggling financially due to its yet-unmet revenue requirements, this doesn’t automatically suggest that upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films like Thunderbolts* (releasing May 2, 2025) and The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25, 2025) should be concerned. In fact, these movies are generally more eagerly awaited than Brave New World ever was, and they haven’t encountered the same challenges that Brave New World has faced. This is a positive sign for both films.
Following initial screenings of “Brave New World”, it’s said that the response was less than favorable, leading to a large number of reshoots involving three significant scenes being edited out. However, neither film’s narrative has required alteration for “Thunderbolts” or “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”. In contrast, both movies have generated excitement among fans due to their ensemble cast, while some viewers seemed hesitant about anyone other than Steve Rogers taking on the role of Captain America.
Regardless of whether Aldous Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’ turns out to be a flop or a hit at the box office, it won’t affect the performance of this year’s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. So, MCU enthusiasts can continue eagerly anticipating the upcoming releases. By the way, the entire MCU collection is available on Disney+, and ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ is currently screening in cinemas near you.
