Supporters of Netflix’s series adaptation of “The Witcher” seem to face recurring challenges. They’ve grappled with various controversies such as deviations from the original storyline by showrunners, concerns over story tempo, and an unexpected recast for the main character Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), replaced by Liam Hemsworth starting from Season 3. Despite these continuous setbacks, some fans have maintained hope ahead of the expected release of Season 4 later this year. Unfortunately, additional troubles concerning the planned spin-offs of the franchise have arisen.
Netflix’s streaming titan has seen modest achievements with a few spin-offs, such as the live-action prequel miniseries “Blood Origin” and the dark animated fantasy film “Nightmare of the Wolf”. However, its latest ventures into the universe of “The Witcher”, specifically the prequel series “The Rats” and an unnamed kid-friendly animated show, have been permanently halted by Netflix. This article will provide information about these canceled spin-offs, as well as insights into what the showrunners are planning next.
Netflix May Repurpose Footage from Canceled Spin-Off ‘The Rats’
At the close of The Witcher’s third season, viewers encounter a band of rough and lawless individuals known as The Rats. Struggling with hardships and eager for blood, this motley crew of six isn’t hesitant to exhibit violent behavior towards those who have wronged them. Ciri joins their ranks following her escape from the Frying Pan (also known as the Korath desert), signaling a fresh, ominous phase in her storyline’s progression.
In the beginning of Season 4, the storyline for Ciri might continue, but the showrunners are also working on a spin-off series titled “The Rats.” This series will delve into their backstory before they crossed paths with Ciri. The roles of Giselher, Mistle, Kayleigh, Iskra, Reef, and Asse have been given to Ben Radcliffe, Christtle Elwin, Fabian McCallum, Aggy K. Adams, Juliette Alexandra, and Connor Crawford respectively. Moreover, action star Dolph Lundgren is set to play a rogue witcher named Brehen, who goes by the nickname “Cat of Iello.
As a die-hard movie buff, I was thrilled when filming for “The Rats” prequel commenced in 2023, right here in South Africa, under the guidance of director Mairzee Almas, renowned for her work on “The Sandman” and “Shadow & Bone.” The project then moved swiftly into post-production, giving the impression that it was all systems go. However, an unexpected twist emerged when Redanian Intelligence unveiled that the showrunners had only managed to film a fraction of what they’d intended for the entire series, leaving Netflix unconvinced. In the end, “The Rats” was not picked up by the streamer. Nevertheless, they plan to repurpose some of the footage in “The Witcher” Season 4, due later this year. So, we’ll just have to wait and see if they incorporate it into the show (perhaps as flashbacks) or abandon the idea altogether.
An Untitled Animated Series Has Also Been Dropped
Alongside the cancellation of “The Rats,” Netflix seems to have paused work on another anticipated spin-off in the “Witcher” series. Although details about this potential animated series for children were scarce, there had been rumors that it was under production. The specifics about the show’s storyline remained unknown, and Netflix hadn’t officially confirmed its existence, let alone announced any plans to halt its development.
It appears that Redanian Intelligence has mentioned that the anime “Sirens of the Deep” is the final Witcher spin-off produced by Netflix. In other words, it seems that the children’s show associated with the series is no longer in development. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that fans will ever learn more about its plot, but given the misfortune the franchise has experienced so far, perhaps it’s better this way.
What Can Fans Expect Next from ‘The Witcher’?
Despite some cancellations of spin-offs, fans of “The Witcher” have much to anticipate in the forthcoming years. The fourth season is projected for release in late 2025, and production on its concluding fifth season has already started, set to wrap up early in 2026. Furthermore, the long-awaited anime spinoff titled “Sirens of the Deep” is scheduled to debut on February 11, 2025. This series finds Geralt investigating a perplexing conflict between humans and sea creatures following his employment to probe several attacks on a coastal village. Notably, many original cast members will reprise their roles in the anime (with Henry Cavill being replaced by Doug Cockle, who voiced Geralt in all of CD Projekt Red’s video games).
Beyond this, it’s been verified that showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich is actively crafting additional spin-offs in the future. In a chat with SFX magazine, Hissrich expressed enthusiasm, “I’m captivated by this universe. I’m always on the lookout for chances to broaden it beyond the primary series.” Her deep affection for the show and its potential for intricate, fantasy storytelling suggests a lasting future for the franchise. Remarkably, she revealed that she had already been brainstorming offshoot concepts even before the adapted series debuted on Netflix six years ago. Thus, if viewers are faced with further dismay about the main series or any unforeseen setbacks, they can take comfort in knowing that those working behind the scenes will preserve the show’s enchantment for many years to come.
