Warning: Plot details for the episode “Unearth” from Season 7 of the TV series FBI may contain spoilers. You can watch it on Paramount+ the following day if you have a subscription.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I must say that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has certainly tested my character, Scola, to the limit during season seven. It all began when I was forced to bid farewell to my long-time partner, Tiff, which left me struggling to find harmony with any new team member since then. The arrival of John Boyd in the 2025 TV schedule brought a fresh perspective, culminating in a joyful resolution for him when he found peace about his deceased brother – even featuring a crossover from FBI: Most Wanted’s Shantel VanSanten. However, the episode titled “Unearth” didn’t offer the same level of resolution for me. Nevertheless, it was a powerful installment, and I eagerly anticipate that the cast remains consistent for season eight.
During “Unearth,” Maggie was absent from the office, potentially having established a link in the previous episode that necessitated Scola and OA working together instead. At first glance, the case of the week appeared unrelated to John Boyd’s character, as it revolved around the murders of two jurors preparing for a mafia trial. However, the probe eventually led back to his former school, stirring nostalgic feelings in Scola about his time there. Simultaneously, he was grappling with the recent demise of an old friend.
Eventually, it became clear that a man whom Scola thought was trustworthy at Cornwall was actually a predator, exploiting his position to sexually abuse students for numerous years. This revelation left Scola quite upset and he continued to navigate through the situation. Addressing the colonel responsible for all the wrongdoings, Scola exclaimed:
“It turned out that the man I trusted was a sexual predator who abused students at Cornwall for years. I’m shaken up by this discovery, but I’m still in the midst of dealing with it.”
“As it unfolded, I found out that the person I considered reliable at Cornwall was actually a predator who used his position to assault students over many years. This news has left me rattled and I’m working through it all.”
“In time, we discovered that the man I trusted at Cornwall had been preying on students for years by using his position. I can’t help but feel unsettled by this disclosure, and I remain engaged in addressing the situation.
A close companion who graduated with me from Cornwall, I believe you’ll recall him – David Murray. He was always among your favorites, wasn’t he? After graduation, he found a wonderful woman named Julia and they got married. They had a beautiful daughter together. Then, quite unexpectedly, he took his own life. I couldn’t comprehend the reason behind it. Could this be the fate of your favorites, Colonel? I remember you mistreating David Murray… You stripped him bare, leaving him shattered and broken. This is something I cannot let go unheeded. I vow to do everything within my capacity to ensure that you are held accountable for what you did to him and everyone like him.
In a cruel twist of events, Scola found himself grappling with these revelations while simultaneously putting his own life on the line to shield the colonel, who was being pursued by one of the perpetrators. Thankfully, OA managed to persuade the gunman to lower his weapon instead of engaging in a violent confrontation, and the number of potential victims continued to expand as more individuals stepped forward with their stories.
In simpler terms, Scola shared with OA that he felt thankful for his time at Cornwall and fortunate to have avoided being a victim. Moreover, he confessed that he simply longed for his friend. In the emotionally reserved world of Dick Wolf’s crime dramas, OA’s gesture of placing an arm around Scola could be seen as a strong comforting embrace.
It seems that John Boyd taking on another heavy episode for Scola makes me wonder if the show, FBI: Most Wanted, might not be returning after Season 7, considering CBS has renewed nine shows, excluding FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International. This leaves me speculating about the series’ future beyond the current season.
The future of both FBI spinoffs is still uncertain, but it brings me great joy to know that CBS renewed the original FBI for an impressive three additional seasons last spring. This ensures the show will continue to air until Season 9 during the 2026-2027 TV season. Although this doesn’t guarantee the cast will stay the same, I can’t help but feel hopeful about its future.
I, a devoted follower, am excited to share that my favorite FBI shows are taking a brief hiatus until March 11. Upon this date, they’ll be back in their regular Tuesday evening spots on CBS. Until then, I can’t wait to rewatch episodes from this season, which are now available for streaming on Paramount+. Enjoy!
