Cape Fear

In the latest casting news, Patrick Wilson has signed on for the upcoming remake of “Cape Fear.” According to Variety, Wilson joins a cast that already includes Amy Adams and Javier Bardem. This new take on Cape Fear, airing on Apple TV+, will be the third adaptation, following the 1962 film directed by J. Lee Thompson and Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake, both based on the 1957 novel “The Executioners” by John D. MacDonald. Unlike its predecessors, this version will be presented as a series rather than a movie.

The 10-episode series’ official logline reads:

As a devoted follower, I find myself bracing for turbulence in the lives of blissfully united legal powerhouse couple, Anna (Adams) and Tom Bowden. The tranquility they’ve built is about to be shattered by the return of Max Cady (Bardem), an ominous figure from their past, who has just been released from prison.

In the ’90s, Martin Scorsese took charge of a remake, where Robert De Niro played Max Cady, a man convicted of rape, seeking revenge against his former lawyer Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte). Max believed Sam was responsible for his 14-year imprisonment. The film also featured Jessica Lange, Juliette Lewis, and Joe Don Baker. Notably, Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck from the 1962 original “Cape Fear” made brief appearances. De Niro and Lewis, who played Sam’s daughter Danielle Bowden, received praise from critics and were nominated for both Academy Awards and Golden Globes.

Scorsese is coming back for the forthcoming Apple TV+ series, during which he will serve as an executive producer alongside legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg.

Why Patrick Wilson Is a Great Addition to Apple TV+’s ‘Cape Fear’

Wilson kicked off his acting journey on the Broadway stage, receiving Tony Award nominations for parts in musicals such as “The Full Monty” and “Oklahoma!”, before moving to cinema. Over the course of his career, he’s demonstrated his talent for versatility with roles in films like “Hard Candy”, “Little Children”, and “Watchmen”, and on television, he earned praise and awards for his work on “Angels in America” and FX’s “Fargo”. He is best known for his horror genre performances as Josh Lambert in the “Insidious” series and Ed Warren in the “Conjuring” universe. In 2023, Wilson stepped into directing with “Insidious: The Red Door”, adding to his reputation as a horror genre icon.

Apple TV+ characterizes “Cape Fear” as a nerve-wracking, Hitchcock-style thriller examining America’s fascination with true crime in the 21st century, emphasizing the chilling aspects that Wilson excels in. This adds an intriguing layer to the already impressive ensemble cast. Although Adams will play attorney Bowden and Bardem takes on the imposing Max Cady, we eagerly await the revelation of Wilson’s role (fingers crossed for him playing Steve Bowden, Amanda’s husband). We are especially looking forward to watching Bardem reprise his villainous roles, particularly as the terrifying Anton Chigurh in “No Country for Old Men” and Raoul Silva in “Skyfall.

As of now, Apple TV+ has not yet announced when the “Cape Fear” series will be airing. Steven Spielberg is one of the executive producers, working alongside Daryl Frank and Justin Falvey from Amblin Television. Additionally, Alex Hedlund and Nick Antosca from Eat the Cat, as well as Scorsese and Bardem, are also involved in this production. Antosca, who has previously worked on shows like “Channel Zero,” “The Act,” “Brand New Cherry Flavor,” and “A Friend of the Family,” is serving as the writer, showrunner, and executive producer for “Cape Fear.
