In a recent reflection, actor Kanwaljit Singh, known for his role as Ashwin Kumar in the series Mrs., discussed the deeply rooted attitudes among men in society. He noted that despite facing criticism, change often proves difficult to achieve. The show Mrs., featuring Sanya Malhotra and premiered on ZEE5 on February 7, 2025, is a remake of The Great Indian Kitchen. In this film, Richa, a trained dancer, battles traditional norms after marriage and eventually fights against oppression as she stands up for herself.
In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Kanwaljit Singh openly discussed his views on playing Mrs. and his unique method for the role. He mentioned that he chose not to watch The Great Indian Kitchen beforehand, so as to maintain an original portrayal, avoiding any potential subconscious impact from the Malayalam film.
In discussing the underlying messages of the tale, he underscored that age-old patriarchal patterns continue, suggesting that even in the face of hard realities, transformation proves difficult. His words were, “The cycle just spins on and on. We won’t change! If they throw any dirt at us, we still won’t change for the better.
Kanwaljit pointed out that his character’s actions are influenced by generations of conditioning. Essentially, he suggested that the son learns and adopts behaviors from his father and grandfather, seeing this as the expected way to act. In his view, these deeply rooted traits significantly impact one’s perspective, making people feel righteous in their actions without ever questioning them.
Kanwaljit Singh admitted that when he initially saw the movie during its debut, he was taken aback because he had underestimated the forcefulness of his character’s actions. He was disconcerted by how convincingly he played this ruthless role and ended up expressing remorse for it. Sanya Malhotra found his response quite entertaining when she noticed it.
The actor from “Mrs.” responded to the criticism about the movie allegedly promoting ‘harmful feminism’. He explained that the film isn’t pushing an agenda but is merely reflecting societal norms. He underscored that the narrative highlights a longstanding cycle of patriarchal indoctrination, which needs to be disrupted instead of reinforced.
Meanwhile, Mrs. is currently streaming on ZEE5.
