Upcoming Exhibition: NANZUKA showcases a comprehensive review of the illustrious career of Hajime Sorayama, the celebrated Japanese artist recognized for his hyper-realistic depictions of alluring robots.
The “Light, Reflection, Transparency” exhibit will feature a wide range of artworks dating back to the 1970s. As suggested by the exhibition’s title, these three elements – light, reflection, and transparency – are recurring themes in Sorayama’s work. This is a testament to the artist’s ongoing effort to portray light in ways that transcend the limitations imposed by traditional painting methods.
In Sorayama’s artwork, figures of humans, animals, even extinct beings like dinosaurs, are shown together with robots. This suggests a thought-provoking view of a future in which biological life seamlessly blends with technological civilization. These pieces are skillfully designed to stimulate the mind, combining ideas about human intelligence, physicality, and the passage of time, while posing deep questions about the direction technology and artificial intelligence might take us.
At the exhibition, you’ll find an extensive collection of Sorayama’s famous art pieces, including recent sculptures, a video exhibit, and the massive aluminum robot that graced Dior’s Pre-Fall 2019 menswear show, as well as his first robot painting from a 1978 whiskey advertisement.
On February 28, the exhibition titled “Light, Reflection, Transparency” will debut at NANZUKA ART INSTITUTE in Shanghai. This exhibition will run until June 15, 2025.
