Marvel Studios’ upcoming ensemble film, Thunderbolts, faces off against an upcoming action thriller directed by the maker of movies like The Grey and The A-Team. This director’s story about a secretive special forces unit called Shadow Force has officially been given a release date. Starting May 2, 2025, moviegoers can catch both Shadow Force and Thunderbolts in theaters, making for two exciting action films to watch during the summer season.
Under the guidance of Scandal and Django Unchained’s Omar Sy, the movie Shadow Force revolves around a pair who used to head a multinational special forces unit called Shadow Force. They disobeyed orders by falling in love and went into hiding to safeguard their son, with a substantial bounty on their heads and the relentless Shadow Force pursuing them. As their family’s struggle escalates, it turns into an all-out war.
Shadow Force, a film directed by Joe Carnahan, who is famously recognized for movies like Smokin’ Aces, the 2018 remake of Death Wish, and collaborative works with Frank Grillo such as Boss Level and Copshop (which features Gerard Butler), is currently in production. Carnahan is also slated to lead the upcoming Netflix film, RIP, starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as police officers who uncover a hidden cache of money in an old warehouse. The script for Shadow Force was co-written by Leon Chills and Carnahan, with performances from Mark Strong, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Cliff “Method Man” Smith. The production is overseen by Washington, Pilar Savone, Stephen “Dr.” Love, and Sterling K. Brown, and is a joint effort between Lionsgate and Media Capital Technologies.
‘Shadow Force’s Omar Sy Is Fast Becoming the Next Action Icon
A French actor initially became well-known for his performance in the comedy-drama film “The Intouchables,” which won him the César Award for Best Actor. Subsequently, he appeared in various high-profile franchises such as X-Men: Days of Future Past, where he portrayed mutant rebel Bishop, Jurassic World and its sequel Jurassic World Dominion, and Transformers: The Last Knight.
Through his outstanding performance as Arsène Lupin in the highly praised Netflix series “Lupin”, Sy has gained recognition among U.S. viewers. Now, he’s making a name for himself as an action hero, with “Shadow Force” being one of several recent projects showcasing his love for this genre. Last year, Sy teamed up with Nathalie Emmanuel, known for her roles in “Game of Thrones” and “Fast and Furious”, for the remake of John Woo’s film, “The Killer”.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Omar Sy is stepping into the action hero shoes vacated by Chris Hemsworth, star of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as he leads a TV spin-off of the ‘Extraction’ franchise. Here’s the official synopsis for the series, slated to premiere on Netflix, which you can read below.
In the heart-pounding environment of ‘Extraction,’ this action-packed series chronicles a mercenary named Sy, who embarks on a perilous operation to save hostages in Libya. Caught between warring groups and relentless assassins, the show explores the inner turmoil and complex personalities of its characters, all grappling with emotional hardships such as pain, deceit, and decisions that could mean life or death.
