Since the debut of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” fans have been speculating whether Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch‘s final appearance was indeed her last in the MCU, or if she would reappear. It appeared that any updates about the Scarlet Witch’s return might have to wait for “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Avengers: Secret Wars.” However, Marvel Comics may have hinted at their plans.
In the finale of the Doctor Strange sequel, Wanda remains behind to destroy Mount Wundagore which crumbled upon her, yet fans of superhero comics are aware that death in such stories often isn’t permanent. In Marvel TVA #3, published on Feb. 26, 2025 (as reported by SlashFilm), Spider-Gwen encounters a character who seems to be the Scarlet Witch from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, trapped in some sort of stasis chamber within the TVA headquarters. Since this could be any Scarlet Witch, the resemblance of her costume to that of her MCU counterpart is significant. The TVA series focuses on the Time Variance Authority, an organization also featured in Loki and Deadpool & Wolverine. Given that the comics take place within the multiverse, it’s uncertain whether this Scarlet Witch is indeed the same one from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Although the visual representation of the Scarlet Witch in this comic appears similar to her Marvel Cinematic Universe version, it seems rather improbable that Marvel Studios would allow such a significant plot point to be included in a comic that many viewers may not recognize. The controversial move to only reveal the Palpatine message from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker within Fortnite might have discouraged Disney from engaging in similar, large-scale cross-media collaborations. However, Marvel’s comics and films share a complex relationship, and the TVA’s previous appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine could potentially provide some insight into this comic’s connection to the MCU.
Deadpool & Wolverine Might Have Set a Precedence for TVA Canon
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the connection of the TVA series is unclear and somewhat ambiguous. Although there have been tie-in comics like “Fury’s Big Week” that fit within the MCU timeline, their continuity isn’t entirely certain. For instance, this comic depicted Black Widow capturing Samuel Sterns/The Leader after The Incredible Hulk, but this event contradicts what we see in Captain America: Brave New World. Despite this inconsistency, it is worth noting that the TVA comics are associated with the main Marvel Comics universe rather than the movies or Disney+ shows.
The connections between the original Marvel Comics, particularly “Spider-Verse #2” from 2015, and the cinematic universe they spawned are quite intricate. For instance, Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man in the comics is described as resembling “the guy from Seabiscuit,” while a Spider-Variant refers to Andrew Garfield’s Spidey as “I think I saw the guy from The Social Network over there.” Interestingly, these two actors’ versions of Spider-Man were eventually transported from their respective universes into the MCU in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” creating a bridge between the comics and live-action franchise’s multiverse. As a result, the TVA series shares a connection with the authentic MCU, albeit a somewhat shaky one.
If the Scarlet Witch is set to appear in an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project, there’s a chance she might be held at the TVA headquarters. This could potentially include a small reference to her comic book history. The strongest clue that this might be connected to the MCU’s future plans lies in the film “Deadpool & Wolverine.” In this movie, a stone carving of the Scarlet Witch was found on Mount Wundagore within the lair of past Marvel characters living in the Void. Since the Void is where the TVA stores characters and items they don’t need, it is plausible that they kept the Scarlet Witch for a later purpose. This carving could then be seen as an Easter egg hinting at a larger MCU storyline.
