Bass stated that 1,000 firefighters could have been on duty when the fires started but were instead sent home under Chief Crowley’s supervision. In a gathering of journalists and locals, Gibson expressed his concern over the way a situation was managed and accused Bass of attempting to pass the fault on to someone else.
