As a passionate film buff, I must confess that “Cold Wallet” had the makings of an intriguing tale: A group of Redditors, swindled out of their crypto, decide to take a billionaire hostage in hopes of recovering their lost funds. However, the story’s promise was sadly squandered by a narrative that lacked depth and coherence.
The allure of quick digital riches has enticed many, leaving countless individuals bankrupt. Reflect upon the chaos left behind by the Hawk Tuah meme coin fiasco, or even our own President’s missteps. It isn’t unrealistic to imagine disgruntled investors seeking vengeance. The issue at hand is that any semblance of believability vanishes in the face of glaring incompetence and plot loopholes big enough to drive a truck through.
On a snowy Christmas night, Billy (Raúl Castillo) and his best friend are tipsy at a bar. The spiritually inclined MMA trainer Dom (Tony Cavalero) is present, as Billy brags about an imminent fortune amidst the lively “Jingle Bell Rock” music. He’s found a foolproof investment that could alleviate their financial troubles, and he needs some cash to buy Tulip cryptocurrency. It’s skyrocketing in value, and they should hop on this opportunity before it disappears.
Fool’s Gold
I trudge towards my old residence, clutching an expensive present destined for the holiday season. My daughter erupts with joy at the unexpected Christmas windfall, but my ex-spouse demands my immediate departure. The weight of unpaid child support and mortgage bills hangs heavy on my shoulders. I pledge that a new home is just around the corner. Impulsively, I whip out my trading app as evidence of my newly acquired wealth, only to be met with a disheartening shock – the account shows a negative balance, indicating all my investments have gone sour. In essence, I’m in deeper debt now than before.
Reports indicate that the Tulip exchange has stopped functioning following the enigmatic demise of its creator, Charles Hegel (portrayed by Josh Brener). A substantial amount of funds appears to have vanished, leaving account holders locked out. As anger surges within Billy, an instant message from Eva (played by Melonie Diaz), a hacker he met online, sparks his outrage. Eva suspects that Hegel didn’t really pass away and made off with the money. She delved into his financial records and discovered the location of a secluded mansion. It seems likely that this is where Hegel is hiding out, and potentially where they can recover their missing funds.
It’s quite fortunate that Eva resides close to Billy and Dom, and it’s almost hard to believe that Hegel, who can theoretically be anywhere globally, is reachable by the group. Let’s go along with these coincidences and track our oddball heroes on their journey. You’ll find yourself chuckling at a deliberately comical scene where they arm themselves. However, the humor fades as they make their way to the house in a snowstorm, armed with a scanty strategy and no idea of what challenges lie ahead.
It’s quite conspicuous that none of the characters in the story are wearing protective gear like masks or gloves, nor do they seem to have any measures to hide their identities. Given the setting, it’s surprising that such a mansion wouldn’t have some sort of security system with cameras. If Hegel had staged his own death, he wouldn’t be able to contact the authorities. However, it seems unrealistic to believe that he would be so vulnerable to amateur criminals without any means of defense. Screenwriter John Hibey (Lift) portrays Billy and Dom as impulsive individuals on the brink of stupidity, while Eva, who appears intelligent, acts irrationally and disregards safety precautions. All these actions make no sense when one is entering a potentially hazardous situation unprepared.
Inept Criminals
As the action unfolds, Hegel, playing his part as the stereotypical ruthless capitalist antagonist, will likely elicit an eye-roll or two. However, if anyone was truly skilled and serious in their endeavor, they would swiftly expose Hegel’s bluff, leaving him financially depleted in a matter of moments. Yet, he perceives their inexperience and attempts to create discord within their group, making these particular scenes seem rather implausible.
It’s equally absurd that Hegel isn’t restrained or silenced. He rambles endlessly like an unrepentant Charles Ponzi, while the other characters mysteriously wander around the house as if on a guided tour. This deliberate choice by Hibey and debut director Cutter Hodierne was intended to reveal their intentions. Desperate individuals often resort to extreme actions. However, this tactic falls flat if viewers don’t trust the creators’ skills. It’s like watching a tragic accident unfold in real time.
Catastrophic Crypto Crashes
The term “Cold Wallet,” which describes a method for storing cryptocurrency offline, truly reflects the gold rush mentality of cryptocurrency traders and their tendency to blindly follow trends. The authors, Hibey and Hodierne, cleverly allude to the Roaring Kitty financial debacle with a passing mention of GameStop. Characters such as Billy, Dom, and Eva are modeled after the multitude of Redditors who gamble with the markets, playing a dangerous game of Russian roulette. They often become victims of market volatility and scams like pump-and-dump schemes with few options for protection. Billy’s complaints about receiving “no bailout” ring true because it is usually the average investor who suffers while the fraudsters manage to evade consequences. This harsh reality serves as a crucial lesson from this narrative.
A person resorting to violence to handle situations will likely face an even more dire consequence. The Cold Wallet lacks credibility. Instead of dwelling on its weak ending and third act, let’s focus on the main idea: It’s unfortunate that the movie didn’t live up to expectations, as it had potential. With a stronger script and better-developed characters, it could have done justice to its premise. Cold Wallet is a production by Vanishing Angle. It will be released both on VOD and in select theaters on February 28th through Well Go USA Entertainment.
