Heads up! The following narrative delves into the first two episodes of the third season of ‘The White Lotus‘. If you haven’t watched these episodes yet and have a Max subscription, now might be a good time to catch up!
Ever since The White Lotus debuted several years ago, its fan base has been growing steadily, and with the premiere of Season 3, we’ve been introduced to a diverse group of characters that we either adore or can’t help but dislike. Typically, the opening scene sets a somber tone, hinting at a potential tragedy – this time, it seems a shooting incident may be involved. By the time the final credits roll on the 2025 TV schedule, someone will likely meet their end. There’s been plenty of speculation about what twists and turns the story might take, and I sincerely hope that Walton Goggins’ character, Rick Hatchett, won’t be the one to meet an untimely demise.
From the moment I laid eyes on Rick aboard that boat en route to the White Lotus resort in Thailand, a sense of anticipation stirred within me, suspecting he’d play a significant role throughout the season. Whether it’s something positive or negative remains uncertain. Given this series, though, there’s likely a mix of both. Despite feeling concerned for his well-being, I’m equally intrigued to unravel the mysteries of his character’s journey…
I’m Interested In All The Characters, But Rick Has A Mystique About Him That I Just Can’t Figure Out
In the captivating premiere of The White Lotus Season 3, I find myself deeply intrigued by each character’s complexities, as they all appear to be concealing secrets not just from others, but possibly also from themselves. Among them, Rick stands out with his guarded behavior, rough exterior, and apparent dislike for his youthful and enthusiastic girlfriend, Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood). His situation seems ripe for disaster, making me unable to look away.
I’m finding it hard to decode him, his history, his motivations, or what makes him so grumpy with a hint of melancholy in his gaze. As the eight-episode series unfolds, I expect we’ll unravel more about his character, and I plan to jot down observations like a detective until we crack the case.

His Obsession With The White Lotus’s Co-Owner, Jim Hollinger, Brought Him To Thailand But We Don’t Know Why
Right from the start, the show hints that Rick’s presence at the White Lotus resort is solely driven by a desire to meet Jim Hollinger, the hotel’s owner. The reason behind Rick’s eagerness and disappointment upon learning that Jim isn’t on the island but in Bangkok remains unclear as of now in this season. However, given that Rick mentions he’ll be heading to Bangkok for a few days in the second episode, it seems likely that he intends to confront this elusive figure there.
It’s unclear whether Rick insists on seeing Jim because he’s owed money, there’s some past issue between them, or if they might even be related (I’ll delve into Rick’s family background later). With all these potential explanations swirling around, I suspect this mystery will keep me hooked for quite a while.

Rick Initially Comes Off As A Dick, But His Stress Management Session Showed A Different Side Of Him
In Season 3 of “The White Lotus,” each character carries their own burdens – past wounds, hidden agendas, or escalating troubles that are unfolding. Whether you’re looking at the guests or the staff, they all seem to be dealing with quite a lot. Even Rick, who was initially portrayed as a real jerk towards everyone he encountered, showed a different side after a pivotal scene in “Special Treatments.” This made me see him in an entirely new and more sympathetic way.
During Rick’s stress management session, he didn’t reveal all his thoughts and feelings, but he did disclose some information regarding his family background, including the unfortunate circumstances surrounding his parents’ demise. Moreover, in a heartfelt exchange, Rick was candid about mental health matters, which appeared to ignite a catalyst for future changes as the plot progresses.

Is He Connected To The Smash And Grab At The Resort Shop, Or Am I Looking Too Much Into It?
It’s just a thought that popped into my head, but what if Rick might be linked to the burglary at the White Lotus store during the second episode? The thieves were completely disguised, so it could have been any local (perhaps the men who appeared shooting in the opening scene) or even one of the guests.
Rick seems to exude an air of having engaged in questionable activities previously and has mysteriously not been able to visit Australia for unspecified reasons. Could he be a covert international thief assessing the resort’s security, or perhaps a small-time crook aiming higher? Alternatively, could this all be a diversionary tactic? Time alone will reveal the truth.

And His Energy With Greg During The Dinner Scene Was So Tense And Odd
In all three seasons of “The White Lotus,” the character played by John Gries, named Greg Hunt, consistently causes nothing but trouble. Following suspicions of swindling Jennifer Coolidge’s character, Tanya, and apparently orchestrating her death to gain access to her fortune, he reappeared as Heather’s friend’s older boyfriend in Season 3. It didn’t take long for Greg and Rick to come into contact with each other during the new season.
This particular scene, quite intensely gripping for the season thus far, seemed to carry an undercurrent of apprehension and intensity that left me uneasy. Admittedly, I might be reading too much into it, but there was a sense, somewhat subtle yet palpable, that Greg and Rick were acquainted or aware of each other in some capacity. Could they have a connection, or are they simply two worn-out canines, keeping their distance from one another?

I Need To Know More About What’s Going on With Him (And I Hope It’s Nothing Sinister)
I’m eagerly anticipating learning more about Rick, including his background, motivations, and current predicament as The White Lotus Season 3 unfolds. Ideally, he’ll emerge as the season’s moral compass, proving to be a genuinely good person with noble intentions regarding Jim Hollinger. Yet, I can’t shake this sense of foreboding that something tragic may be in store for him before the story reaches its conclusion.
Look forward to catching new installments of “The White Lotus” Season 3 every Sunday on HBO, or stream it online via Max. Can’t wait to join them again on their island adventure, eagerly anticipating the unfolding events involving Rick and all the other characters, whether they bring good fortune or face challenges ahead.
