Before Taylor Sheridan became a household name for his gripping TV series like “Yellowstone,” “Landman,” and numerous other projects that graced our screens, he was renowned for his captivating screenplays that many skilled directors brought to life. Among these works, the standout film would be “Sicario,” directed by Denis Villeneuve. Before Villeneuve’s critically acclaimed adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel “Dune” in 2015, it was “Sicario” that solidified his reputation as a masterful storyteller with an eye for gritty realism. Now, this gripping film will find its new home on Netflix starting from March.
On March 1st, the gripping movie “Sicario” will be available on a streaming platform, giving Netflix users a chance to watch one of Denis Villeneuve’s earlier mainstream films. Featuring Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, and Daniel Kaluuya, Sicario delves into the intricate machinations of the war on drugs and the morally questionable federal agents who manipulate legal loopholes to carry out their covert operations. The director’s subtleties in filmmaking complement Sheridan’s script effectively, as many aspects of the story and the dark nature of the operation are suggested rather than directly depicted.
Similar to the TV shows written and overseen by Sheridan, the movie Sicario unfolds in a borderland environment, where unexpected lawlessness permeates the federal agency at its core. The character of FBI Special Agent Kate Mercer, portrayed by Blunt, is an upright lead whose quest for justice gradually erodes the moral compass she has diligently maintained throughout the film. Boasting a stellar cast, precise direction, and a taut script penned by Sheridan, this is a movie that you’ll either want to rewatch or discover afresh on Netflix.
‘Sicario’ Was a Winning Combination of a Talented Writer and Director
Sicario initially hit the screens on October 2, 2015, to widespread critical appreciation. The movie garnered a remarkable 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics lauding its compelling narrative, Villenueve’s knack for generating suspense through what isn’t shown, and Roger Deakins’ stunning cinematography. The film is not just a gripping tale but also a technical masterpiece, securing three Oscar nominations in 2016 for Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, and Best Original Score.
Following the film’s triumphant run, Villeneuve took on several high-profile projects including Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and eventually the Dune series which solidified his reputation. Meanwhile, Sheridan collaborated with David Mackenzie for the 2016 release of Hell or High Water. He later directed one of his own screenplays in 2017 with Wind River, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner. The rest, as they say, is television lore, with Sheridan’s creations like Yellowstone gaining immense popularity in the cultural spotlight.
Eventually, the original film Sicario got a sequel titled Sicario: Day of the Soldado, released in 2018, but without Denis Villeneuve’s participation. Stefano Sollima directed this movie and Lonergan returned to write the script. Unlike the first movie, Sicario: Day of the Soldado focused more on the characters played by Del Toro and Brolin, yet it didn’t reach the same level of success as the original. It became clear that the strength of Sicario lay in the unique blend of Sheridan’s and Villeneuve’s talents. Now, Netflix subscribers will have a chance to witness this impressive teamwork when Sicario becomes available on their streaming service starting March 1.
