Two renowned actors from Hollywood, Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood, have expressed their grief over the passing of the incredibly talented Gene Hackman. This news comes following the announcement today about the death of Hackman, his wife, and one of their pets. Joining the tributes are industry veterans such as Francis Ford Coppola and Josh Brolin.
Clint Eastwood acted alongside Hackman in “Unforgiven” (1992) and “Absolute Power” (1997). Hackman won an Oscar for his outstanding performance as Little Bill Daggett in Eastwood’s Western, and it’s no wonder that the director has many kind words for him following his death. In a statement to Variety, Eastwood commented on Hackman:
Gene was unparalleled in his acting abilities, displaying both intense passion and natural instincts flawlessly, without ever making a mistake. Beyond being an exceptional actor, he was also a cherished friend whose absence I feel deeply.
After Eastwood’s statement, Saul Rubinek, costar in “Unforgiven,” narrated an extensive tale about collaborating with Hackman, further emphasizing that the actor is, and will continue to be, a legendary figure in Hollywood. Rubinek expressed this by saying:
I had the privilege of working alongside Gene for a brief spell in ‘Unforgiven.’ One memory that stands out is the impromptu ‘Duck of Death’ jail scene, where Gene, Richard Harris, and I were involved. This scene was added at the last minute due to rain. Gene’s character, Sheriff Little Bill, had most of the lines, and Clint Eastwood enjoyed filming rehearsals. Working with Gene in such a setting, with the intimidating presence of Richard Harris on my other side… it was a moment I simply couldn’t miss. I had to be present. I had to perform. Gene raised the bar so effortlessly, without me realizing he was doing it at all. He made it feel easy. The scene you see in the movie is actually that first rehearsal – our first time performing it together. I’ll never forget the experience of sharing the same air with him. We lost a tremendous artist, but his work lives on for us to revisit.
Morgan Freeman Pays Tribute to “Gifted” Gene Hackman
In a similar vein, another esteemed actor from “The Unforgiven,” the exceptional Morgan Freeman, also joined the chorus of messages circulating online following Hackman’s announcement. Freeman and Hackman had previously worked together in the Western film, but they also shared screen-time eight years later in the suspenseful thriller “Under Suspicion.” In a heartfelt tribute via X, Freeman reminisced that working with Hackman was one of the most memorable experiences of his career. He stated:
One memorable milestone in my professional journey was breathing life into the French film “Gardé a Vue” (Under Suspicion), alongside the exceptionally talented Gene Hackman. Needless to say, collaborating on “Unforgiven” also ranks high. Farewell, my friend.
Up-to-date details regarding the demise of Hackman and his spouse are yet to unfold fully; however, it has been verified that no indications of suspicious circumstances have been found at this point. The coroner’s office is currently conducting tests, including those aimed at detecting potential carbon monoxide poisoning, in order to establish the cause of death.
