September 5: The Gripping Thriller Taking Paramount+ by Storm!

On September 5th, the highly acclaimed thriller from last year, which has been generating a lot of buzz, is now available for streaming on Paramount+. This real-time thriller made a strong debut at the top of the charts upon its release on February 25th, but has since slipped to third place behind the swords and sandals sequel, Gladiator 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the follow-up to the video game.

Directed by Tim Fehlbaum, September 5 proved to be a somewhat controversial release, as it follows the events that transpired in Munich on September 5, 1972, during the Summer Olympics. On that day, the ABC team in charge of sports coverage decided to show to the entire world what was happening in the Olympic villas when a group of terrorists took Israeli athletes hostage. Led by Roone Arledge, the president of the ABC Sports division, the crew at the station do their best to cover the terrorist attack and expose the terrible improvisation by the German authorities.

The movie scheduled for release on September 5 features Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Leonie Benesch, Ben Chaplin, Georgina Rich, Corey Johnson, Zinedine Souale, and Benjamin Walker, along with several others. It’s produced by Sean Penn, John Ira Palmer, and Fehlbaum. The screenplay, co-written by Fehlbaum, Moritz Binder, and Alex David, was recognized at the Academy Awards, and the film has been nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

Does ‘September 5’ Have a Shot at the Oscars?

The film primarily unfolds within the ABC Sports station in Munich, situated just a short distance from the villa in reality. Using whatever equipment was available on-site, the crew at the sports station strive to chronicle the events transpiring inside the hostage rooms where Black September militants held eleven Israelis captive. Remarkably, authentic footage captured by ABC that day is integrated into the film, enhancing its authenticity significantly. Interestingly, this movie stands out as one of the few films this year with a runtime under two hours to make it onto the award circuit. September 5, running for 94 minutes, has been skillfully edited to mimic a harrowing cinematic journey in your life, as suggested by MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman’s review of September 5.

There’s no exaggeration in stating that September 5 is one of the greatest 90-minute movies ever produced. The outstanding cast, led by Fehlbaum, and the talented crew behind the camera have created cinematic masterpieces. With awards season approaching, it would be wise to reserve some space on your shelf. I truly hope that September 5 can be appreciated for its artistic merits rather than being dismissed as simple propaganda amidst today’s tragic events. Regardless of political or religious beliefs, September 5 is a day that will forever be remembered.

On September 5th, it’s holding its own against formidable competitors in the Best Original Screenplay category at the upcoming Academy Awards. Contenders such as “A Real Pain”, “The Brutalist”, “Anora”, and “The Substance” are also strong contenders, but many are skeptical of September 5th’s chances. However, this gripping thriller boasts a script that is widely regarded as the best of the year, offering an exceptional adaptation of the true-life (and at times real-time) account of the bravery displayed by journalists and technical crew at ABC during a harrowing event.
