Instead of Winnie-the-Pooh, there’s a new character taking center stage in the public domain, and his name is Steamboat Willie. This classic Disney figure is getting a dark makeover in the upcoming horror movie Screamboat, produced by the team behind the Terrifier series. The film also stars David Howard Thornton, known for his role as Art the Clown, as the murderous mouse. The red-band trailer for this horror movie, directed by Steven LaMorte, has just been released (see it below), and it gives us a glimpse of the gruesome violence we can expect when the film hits theaters on April 12.
Join us for an exciting New York City ferry journey that takes a terrifying twist when a mischievous mouse named Steamboat Willie transforms into a nightmarish monster. Initially, it seems like just a fun trip, but things quickly turn fatal as the tiny troublemaker wreaks havoc with murder and chaos. Filled with thrilling action, side-splitting humor, and a miniature monster at its core, SCREAMBOAT promises an unforgettable cinematic experience that redefines Steamboat Willie in a chilling new way!
Besides Thornton, Screamboat features Allison Pittel (previously known as Stream), Amy Schumacher (The Mean One), Jesse Posey (Selena), Jesse Kove (Cobra Kai), Kailey Hyman (Terrifier 2), Rumi C Jean-Louis (Hightown), Jarlath Conroy (George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead), and Charles Edwin Powell (The Exorcist III). Additionally, be on the lookout for guest appearances by Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf), Brian Quinn (Impractical Jokers), and stand-up comedian Joe DeRosa (Better Call Saul).
David Howard Thornton Calls ‘Screamboat’ a “Full Circle Moment”
Through his iconic role as the menacing clown in the Terrifier series, Thornton has gained notoriety. Interestingly, beyond his acting career, he’s a longtime Disney enthusiast who was raised on a staple of cartoons. In the movie Screamboat, we finally get to listen to his voice breathe life into Steamboat Willie. During an interview with IndieWire, he referred to this experience as a “full circle moment”, having previously acted in a Disney production early in his career. He expressed, “I’ve always been a fan.” and further stated:
The first character voice I developed was Goofy during a storytime session in first grade, and since then, all my other voices have been based on Goofy, Donald, and Mickey Mouse. My breakout role outside of church theater was in the middle school production of Mickey’s Christmas Carol where I played Mickey as Bob Cratchit. This feels like a full-circle moment for me.
