Monster Hunter Wilds Breaks Steam Concurrent Player Record on PC Launch

Monster Hunter Wilds is already breaking Steam chart records mere hours after its PC release.

Once again, the popular role-playing game (RPG) series developed by Capcom, famously known for its monster-hunting themes, has made its return. This time, it introduces a diverse array of both fresh and familiar giant beasts that players can track down in their natural habitats.

Initially, the game “Wilds” received outstanding reviews from critics, garnering an impressive 89% rating on OpenCritic. It was particularly lauded for its expansive open-world setting, vibrant collection of monsters to pursue, and user-friendly interface, which is a significant improvement in a series known for its challenging learning process.

Monster Hunter Wilds Makes Steam History

Within just a few hours of release on PC, “Monster Hunter World” left an indelible mark on the Steam’s all-time sales charts.

According to SteamDB, the recent addition by Capcom to its popular series of monster-hunting games has soared to sixth position on the Steam chart, based on the number of simultaneous players it currently boasts.

31 million players simultaneously logged into Steam within hours of Wilds’ PC debut, setting a new record for the largest Monster Hunter PC launch to date. This impressive number surpassed popular titles such as Dota 2, Elden Ring, and Cyberpunk 2077 in concurrent player count.

Although the current number of 1.3 million concurrent players is noteworthy, it’s important to note that the game’s story might still be under development. Given that Wilds is still relatively new, there’s a possibility that its player count could increase significantly during the launch weekend and beyond, potentially moving up the charts even further.

To provide some context, the latest major PC game from the series, “Monster Hunter World,” didn’t exceed more than 334,000 simultaneous players at its peak, following its early 2018 release on consoles and later arrival on Steam several months afterward.

Nevertheless, this was achieved even though the previous game boasted exceptional downloadable content, such as the highly popular skins inspired by the Monster Hunter movie, featuring the Mila Jovovich costume.

In terms of the most simultaneous users at any given time, Wilds trails slightly behind Lost Ark, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Amazon Games, which reached a peak of 1.33 million concurrent players in February 2022.

In just a short while or possibly even minutes, it’s quite possible that “Monster Hunter Wilds” could surpass another game by approximately 180,000 units and secure the fifth position among top titles.

For it to get any higher than that, something miraculous would need to happen, though.

The peak concurrent user count for the game next in line, which is Counter-Strike 2, is approximately 1.8 million. This indicates that nearly half a million more Steam players would need to play simultaneously at the same time, plus enough to hit the 1.3 million concurrent users needed, in order for it to surpass Wilds and climb as high on the list as its current position.

Below is the full top-10 of the all-time peak concurrent players Steam charts:

  1.  PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS (3.26 million)
  2. Black Myth: Wukong (2.42 million)
  3. Palworld (2.10 million)
  4. Counter-Strike 2 (1.81 million)
  5. Lost Ark (1.33 million)
  6. Monster Hunter Wilds (1.31 million)
  7. Dota 2 (1.30 million)
  8. Cyberpunk 2077 (1.05 million)
  9. Elden Ring (953,426)
  10. Banana (917,272)
