We’re officially delving back into the world of “Crazy Rich Asians,” but perhaps not quite how we initially anticipated. Though there’s supposedly a sequel film in development for the 2018 hit romantic comedy (as far as we’ve been informed!), Max has confirmed that a series, being crafted by co-writer Adele Lim and director Jon M. Chu, is actively progressing on the streaming platform.
The news, initially reported by Variety, validates speculation dating back to 2024, following initial reports of a sequel in 2022 that didn’t immediately come to fruition concerning Gemma Chan and Harry Shum Jr.’s characters (Astrid and Charlie). This delay could be attributed to Adele Lim, one of the co-writers alongside Peter Chiarelli, leaving Jon M. Chu’s adaptations of the subsequent Kevin Kwan novels, “China Rich Girlfriend” and “Rich People Problems,” over a pay dispute she deemed racist and sexist. However, with Lim returning to oversee and produce this series as well as Chu, it seems likely that we could revisit the beloved world introduced in 2018.
