I Figured Outlander’s Final Read-Through Was Emotional, But Sophie Skelton Shared What Really Made It The ‘Perfect Way To Say Goodbye’

As a devoted fan, I can’t contain my excitement as we approach the end of an epic journey with Outlander. The seventh season concluded earlier than expected in the 2025 TV lineup, and filming for the eighth and final season has already wrapped up. With anticipation high, we eagerly await the premiere of Season 8 before the year ends, ensuring that this Droughtlander hiatus won’t be the longest in the series’ history. Details about what lies ahead are scarce, but if you’ve delved into Diana Gabaldon’s source material books, you can make some educated predictions!

However, it wasn’t until speaking with Sophie Skelton that I truly grasped the emotional weight of the final script read-through for the cast. The experience was undeniably impactful and serves as a poignant reminder of the bittersweet conclusion we’re heading towards.

During SCAD TVfest in Atlanta, I had a delightful conversation with actress Caitriona Balfe, who portrays Brianna MacKenzie on the long-running Starz series. At this event, she was honored with the Lumiere Award. While discussing various aspects of the show, she expressed her thoughts on why ‘Outlander’ often gets overlooked in award ceremonies. Intrigued, I asked about her experience during the final script reading for the series. Although she kept specifics about that particular script confidential, her vivid description of that gathering was so enchanting that I can only hope they have pictures to share eventually. She mentioned:

“It was a very special meeting… Everyone was there, and it felt like we were all coming together for something really important. It was a beautiful moment.

The scene was breathtakingly lovely. There was a choir present, and among them were familiar faces of writers who had been absent for some time. It was deeply moving. With the ocean view during our rehearsal, it created an intimate atmosphere, and the gathering was relatively small. The ambiance was incredibly beautiful, making it a fitting farewell.

Initially, I thought the scene was just a simple room setting, elevated only by the script’s emotional moments. But little did I know that the Outlander crew went above and beyond, adding a choir and some recognizable characters, all set against a stunning ocean backdrop. It’s no surprise that Sophie Skelton called it “the perfect way to say goodbye” on the TVfest red carpet!

Despite no explicit mention of who attended the final read-through, it appears that some cast members were present based on photos taken during the wrapping up of filming for Season 8. At a minimum, Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Richard Rankin, and Skelton can be assumed to have been there. It’s interesting to note that this gathering to mark the end of filming Season 8 took place in late September 2024, well over two months prior to the resumption of Outlander for the second half of Season 7.

Skelton continued with Season 7B and later spoke to journalists after the finale at SCAD TVfest, even though he was aware of Brianna’s final fate. So, I inquired if he needed to revisit his filmed scenes to avoid unintentionally revealing spoilers. He answered:

Oh, fantastic! Since we filmed that scene a few years back, it seems you’ve been deeply immersed in the narrative thread I left with Brianna. Given that this is our final installment, you’ve managed to neatly conclude the story in a way that feels satisfying. You appear to be intimately connected with your character’s thoughts, and… it’s almost as if you’re wondering, “What happened to Brianna when her child was taken, leaving her in utter distress?” [laughs]

In the latter part of Season 7, Bree found herself in a challenging situation as her main scene partners were mostly children. This isolation came about because Claire and Jamie were caught up in the American Revolution era, while Roger unintentionally traveled even further back in time. As a result, Brianna was left without anyone to confide in during the ’80s. However, the good news is that Season 7 concluded with the MacKenzie family finally reuniting. Although we don’t know what awaits them in Season 8, Sophie Skelton remains optimistic and feels that the story will be wrapped up “nicely” by the end.

For now, we’re just in a state of anticipation until Outlander Season 8 starts airing, expected to be in 2025. Given that Outlander doesn’t actually time travel, it would be great if the return is closer to mid-year rather than New Year’s Eve. Additionally, the spinoff titled Outlander: Blood of My Blood will debut this summer. It seems reasonable to assume, or at least hope, that Starz might release Season 8 not long after the conclusion of Blood of My Blood’s ten-episode series.
