With FBI: International Still Waiting On A Renewal, I’m Thinking Hopeful Thoughts After A Sweet Story Calling Back To Jesse Lee Soffer’s Chicago P.D. Days

In the 2025 TV schedule, CBS made numerous renewals before February came to an end, much to the delight of some of their top dramas like Elsbeth and Tracker. However, there was no mention of FBI: International, which is in its fourth season with the Fly Team, among the shows receiving a new season order for 2025-2026. As a fan eagerly awaiting renewal news, I’ll shift my attention to an entertaining tale by Eva-Jane Willis that brings back memories of Jesse Lee Soffer’s One Chicago days, rather than dwelling on the delay in renewal updates.

I chatted with Eva-Jane Willis, who has been portraying Smitty, the Europol liaison for the Fly Team since Season 2, regarding the significant Season 4 episode that delved into Smitty’s past at a school that expelled her based on false accusations years ago. Although this storyline was challenging for Smitty (with the exception of reuniting with Christiane Paul’s Katrin Jaeger from the former series), Willis expressed nothing but positive sentiments about shooting the episode titled “Veritas Fidelis,” which is now accessible for streaming with a Paramount+ subscription.

The series managed to shoot scenes at Cambridge University itself, standing in for the fictional institution expelling Smitty, and she mentioned it was “simply stunning” and that being part of this production offered them opportunities seldom experienced by others. After having viewed the episode prior to our conversation, I had a particular query regarding their filming experience there.

Was there an added complexity during the operation due to the sudden snowfall, as the rest of the episode remained without any snow? This was the implication from Willis’ response.

Indeed, we didn’t anticipate snow in Cambridge. Instead, it was primarily rainy with a chill and gusty wind throughout our stay. Given that we were there, we wanted to capture Cambridge’s beauty, so we spent most of our time outdoors. To begin with, the cold was biting, and then, unexpectedly, while filming a scene, the skies turned grey, and large snowflakes began to fall heavily.

From my cozy vantage point at home, the big, soft snowflakes seemed beautiful. However, they posed a challenge for the actors filming on location in Cambridge. In response to this issue, Jesse Lee Soffer, who began his role in FBI: International during Season 4 following ten seasons on Chicago P.D., took steps to address it, as shared by Eva-Jane Willis.

Jesse directly contacted our executive producer via video call and expressed his concern about continuity. He asked if they should continue, to which the response was affirmative. Despite the unpredictable British weather – it could snow one moment, then hail, or turn hot enough to require removing layers – the decision was made to proceed. This is typical of England’s notorious weather, known for its sudden and varied changes, much like experiencing seven seasons in a day.

As a fan of NBC’s One Chicago series, which is part of the Dick Wolf TV universe that includes CBS’ FBI, I’ve seen enough on-location episodes to confirm that the Windy City has its fair share of extreme weather. When I mentioned to Eva-Jane Willis that I thought Soffer might have assumed he left the unexpected snowfall behind in Chicago, she chuckled and replied:

Absolutely! He frequently shares tales about the extreme coldness where he is, which makes us feel chilly even more when we are here. Yet, when everyone else is feeling the chill, he nonchalantly comments, “It’s nothing. I’m okay with this.” He always seems unfazed by the cold.

Despite transitioning from Chicago’s snowy and chilly environment to the set of FBI: International, Soffer doesn’t get to shoot scenes on a sunny Portuguese beach every time! It’s delightful to learn that the actors from these intense shows find humor in off-screen incidents. I eagerly await updates about another season for FBI: International (and hopefully also for FBI: Most Wanted, which has yet to be renewed) sooner than later.

Among the three FBI shows airing on CBS, it’s just the original series that’s assured a continuation, as it was renewed for three more seasons last spring and will run until the 2026-2027 TV season. I’ve been feeling a bit worried about International and Most Wanted ever since there were rumors of an FBI: CIA spinoff, which might be based in New York City and potentially less expensive to produce than either of the current spinoffs. Plus, there are only so many time slots available on Tuesday nights!

Instead of fretting now, let’s concentrate on enjoying moments outside the realm of the FBI more! To revisit the snowy scene featuring Eva-Jane Willis in reminiscing mode, head over to Paramount+ and stream the “Veritas Fidelis” episode from Season 4. And if you’re eager for fresh episodes of International, catch them every Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on CBS, sandwiched between FBI and FBI: Most Wanted.
