Joey Molland, Last Living Core Member of Badfinger, Dies at 77

As I sadly bid farewell to this world, it’s me, Joey Molland – the guitarist from Badfinger who stepped up as the frontman in our later years. I’ve left behind a legacy that echoes through the decades, and at the ripe age of 77, my journey comes to an end.

It was shared on social media that Molland passed away last Saturday, following a prolonged struggle with several health complications.

Badfinger, a renowned Welsh rock group, is recognized for popular tunes like “No Matter What You Do,” “Day After Day,” “Come and Get It,” and “Baby Blue.” Notably, “Baby Blue” gained additional fame when it was played during the final scenes of Breaking Bad. Joining them as their guitarist in the early 1970s was Molland, who stepped in after the band changed its name from The Iveys.

Over the past few years, Joey Molland took charge of a traveling version of the band even though Pete Ham, Mike Gibbins, and Tom Evans, the band’s key members, had already passed away. Initially just on guitar, Molland stepped up as the lead vocalist for these performances, performing under the name Joey Molland’s Badfinger. Fans admired him for his unwavering spirit, and he remained active until last September.

Back in January, I, the gamer, was hit with some unexpected news. My girlfriend Mary shared that my bandmate Molland hadn’t been feeling well at the end of our touring run. Things took a turn for the worse when he was hospitalized in the ICU. It turned out he had contracted a severe bacterial infection because of his diabetes, leading to sepsis. He had to undergo multiple surgeries to combat it. Quite a tough time for all of us.

In 1969, Badfinger joined the Beatles’ private label, Apple Records. Notably, it was Paul McCartney who penned their hit song “Come and Get It.” Additionally, band member Molland lent his talents to two iconic albums: John Lennon’s “Imagine” and George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass.
