Is Monster Hunter Wilds’ borked PC performance because of a spelling error in the game’s config files? Probably not

Players of Monster Hunter Wilds are so eager to enhance the game’s poor performance that numerous individuals tried a supposed remedy over the weekend, asserting that correcting a typo could increase FPS. However, based on our own trials and discussions on social media platforms, a genuine solution for Wilds’ problems can be found elsewhere.

It’s been a rough launch weekend for Wilds with a wave of complaints about poor PC performance, especially when it comes to graphics quality. Capcom released a troubleshooting guide on February 28, but the unusually poor graphics performance doesn’t appear in the developer’s “Currently known issues” page at the time of writing.

It seems some users have been diving into the game files of Wilds, hoping to find a solution or potential fix. For a moment, it appeared as if they succeeded, but upon closer inspection and testing, I’m now less confident that this is indeed the case.

On Saturday, a player on Wilds shared a post in the Steam forums highlighting a mistake in the game’s “config.ini” file where “Resolution” was misspelled as “Resoltuion.” The post suggested that correcting the typo might lead to an increase in frames per second (FPS). To do this, players can locate the “config.ini” file in their Wilds installation directory and change “Resoltuion” to “Resolution”. After making the correction, they should restart the game and check if there is a noticeable improvement in performance.

The “config.ini” file is simply a text document used to record game settings and personal preferences. To locate it, navigate to Steam, right-click on “Monster Hunter Wilds” in your library, choose “Manage,” then select “Browse local files.” You’ll find the “config.ini” file at the top of the main Monster Hunter Wilds folder. If you open and scroll to the end of the file, look for a typo approximately halfway down the [RenderConfig] section in a line that reads: “MinimumStreamingTextureResolution=MinimumStreamingTextureResoltuion_256.

Users on Steam and Reddit reported that correcting a typo in this line boosted their frames per second (FPS), while some mentioned that they observed no substantial improvement or the file returned to its original typo state upon relaunching the game.

After trying out the solution myself, it turned out that the problem persisted for me as well. Prior to the fix, I was consistently getting around 120 FPS. However, after correcting the typo and saving the altered “config.ini” file, I noticed no change in my FPS average. Moreover, the typo resurfaced when I ran the game again. Some users propose setting the “config.ini” file to read-only mode to ensure the typo correction remains, but this prevents Wilds from making any subsequent changes to the “config.ini” file settings.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed an intriguing twist: that typo might not be the culprit after all. Gamers on Reddit and Steam have pointed out the same “Resoltuion” typo in the game’s executable file. This suggests that the code in the config file is functioning correctly, even with the misspelled word.

In coding, typos occasionally slip through, and sometimes developers keep using a misspelled variable instead of correcting it throughout the entire codebase, which could be what’s happening here.

It appears that this solution functions more like a sugar pill rather than an actual remedy. Here’s hoping Capcom swiftly tackles the subpar graphics performance in Monster Hunter Wilds with a proper fix, as even on high settings and powerful hardware, the visuals are surprisingly disappointing. At present, the most ‘wild’ aspect of the Monster Hunter Wilds journey seems to be encountering graphical anomalies.
