Steam has hit a new milestone, breaking 40 million concurrent users for the first time.
On March 2, 2025, a staggering 40 million users simultaneously accessed the platform, breaking the previous record for concurrent PC gaming. Although not all of them were actively playing games, this achievement underscores Steam’s continued dominance as the premier destination for digital gaming.
Steam’s growth has been nothing short of astonishing. A decade ago, it boasted approximately 8.9 million simultaneous users at its peak, an incredibly high number for that era. This figure has since skyrocketed, surpassing 20 million in 2020 and now more than doubling that within the last five years. It seems PC gaming is experiencing a renaissance at the moment, with this trend showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, experts predict it will double again within just five years.
Steam, the popular gaming platform, has more simultaneous users than most countries in the world. To be precise, its concurrent user base is nearly equal to Canada’s total population and exceeds that of nations such as Uzbekistan. According to historical data, Steam might currently boast over 220 million active users globally, surpassing the entire populations of countries like Brazil, Japan, and the UK.
Although the overall count of simultaneous users seems significant, it’s important to note that only a portion of those users were actually playing the game. Approximately 12.8 million players were actively involved in gameplay, while others utilized the store, reviewed their libraries, or participated in community features rather than engaging directly with the game itself.
One factor that contributed significantly to this increase in users was the release of Monster Hunter World, which had a massive launch and attracted over 1.3 million players on Steam. Despite experiencing some initial technical issues, its immense popularity undeniably played a role in increasing the number of Steam users.

Over time, classic games like Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and PUBG remained popular choices, maintaining high rankings. Specifically, Counter-Strike 2 attracted nearly 1.8 million active gamers, solidifying its status as one of the platform’s most-played games. Interestingly, even single-player titles are still thriving. For instance, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 continued to rank in the top ten with over 119,000 players.
One noteworthy trend is the growing popularity of live-service games, with titles like Marvel Rivals now part of this group. With an influx of multiplayer experiences being rolled out, there’s been a gradual boost in user interaction on these platforms.
However, the monetary implication is just as awe-inspiring. It’s been calculated that Steam users have shelled out over $1.9 billion on games they haven’t played yet. This massive spending figure underscores the significant part Steam plays in the gaming lives of millions across the globe. Precedent suggests that Steam may well surpass its own records again in the future.
It’s quite possible that the platform will reach this significant point once more, as there are eagerly awaited updates scheduled for launch in 2025.
