Rockstar Games has revealed that it has taken over the Australian gaming studio known as Video Games Deluxe. This studio was established by the director of the game LA Noire, Brendan McNamara, and is now part of the Rockstar family, officially known as Rockstar Australia.
For about ten years prior to the acquisition, Video Games Deluxe collaborated extensively with Rockstar. This partnership saw the former assisting in rectifying numerous problems that marred the release of the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy, which unfortunately launched in a shambolic state back in 2021.
In addition to aiding in the 2017 re-launch of LA Noire and its VR Case Files, Deluxe was involved in an incredibly ambitious AAA open-world VR project for Rockstar. This project turned out to be the virtual reality adaptation of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, but development on this has been paused since August 2024.
Under the protection of the Rockstar brand now, as Rockstar Australia, people are speculating about the future projects of the studio. Some fans are optimistic that this might imply a possible sequel to LA Noire is not just a dream but a potential reality, although it may still be quite far off.
In a more realistic scenario, considering short-term plans, McNamara and the Rockstar Australia team are likely to contribute significantly during the final stages of Grand Theft Auto 6’s development. Furthermore, this studio could potentially be one of the teams responsible for creating content for the upcoming GTA 6 Online mode.
For more than a decade now, Rockstar Games has mainly focused on expanding their Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead franchises, with Max Payne 3 being the only exception released back in 2012. Since then, they have remastered games like Bully for mobile platforms and LA Noire for VR, but no entirely new titles have emerged from their development studio since.

McNamara was notorious for creating an unhealthy work environment that excessively strained Team Bondi during the production of LA Noire. If a follow-up ever materializes, fans anticipate that the development process will run more smoothly this time.
Regarding other franchises under Rockstar’s wing, they have teamed up with Remedy Studios for a remake of Max Payne 1 and 2, an announcement made back in 2022. However, updates on this project have been scarce ever since the initial announcement.
