It’s amusing to learn about the antics that take place behind the scenes in acting. Sometimes, even for grown-up actors, we need to find strange positions to capture the ideal facial expression for a scene, so I can only imagine the acrobatics required when you’re a child actor! Fortunately, many performers are open with their advice, particularly towards their younger colleagues. Ewan McGregor once shared some guidance he gave to a young co-star during the filming of Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones, and it’s remarkable how effective it turned out to be.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I was reminded of an intriguing moment during my interview on The Graham Norton Show when they asked about a scene I shared with Daniel Logan, who brought young Boba Fett to life in the 2002 Star Wars blockbuster. Specifically, we’re talking about the scene where Obi-Wan Kenobi visits Camino to track down Jango Fett and meets his young clone.
In this scene, I noticed that Daniel had a bit of difficulty conveying the exact emotion required. He admitted as much during our conversation, mentioning that he found it challenging to portray the emotions that the script demanded. This is a fascinating insight for those who might not recall the scene vividly or wish to revisit it by pulling up the movie clip and observing it again.
In simpler terms, George [Lucas] was encouraging [Daniel] to view me with suspicion. As he entered the room and found me there, Daniel had reason to be a bit suspicious. However, George wasn’t providing much clarity, making it difficult for young Daniel who was only trying out inappropriate strategies at the time.
Despite struggling to recall the name of his fellow actor or the specific context during the talk show, McGregor managed to remember his piece of advice quite clearly. Here’s what he shared as his wise counsel:
I pulled him aside and suggested, “When the moment comes for us to exit, pretend as if you’ve let out a really bad fart.” He gave me a puzzled look and asked, “What?” To which I responded, “Just give it a try.” As we exited, he made a face of disgust, and that was the scene they decided to keep.
Upon listening to the story, I too found myself chuckling, just as everyone else on the panel did. It’s amusing because actors can always elicit the most hilarious reactions even from the oddest situations. This isn’t surprising, but when the ‘funny part’ arrived and they showed a clip from the scene, we all burst into laughter.
McGregor has discussed both his backstage antics and his role in the prequels, as well as their divisive response from fans over time. He’s previously spoken about how difficult the early 2000s were for him, a sentiment echoed by co-star Hayden Christensen. With the debut of the Disney+ series “Ahsoka” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi”, there seems to be renewed appreciation for the original prequels. Christensen himself has expressed feeling vindicated for his earlier work.
More recently, certain Star Wars franchise productions have faced challenges attracting an audience. However, actors such as McGregor have not only spoken about their role but also expressed optimism for future projects, which is encouraging to hear from someone who cherishes the Star Wars series and has watched every movie – even in reverse order if desired – since childhood. Yet, I must admit that some recent releases seem to stray from the original’s path.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share an intriguing tidbit from my latest rewatch of “Episode II.” Despite any feelings about the prequels, I find myself consistently drawn back to this film. And just in time for May the 4th, here’s a fun fact that might pique your interest in a new franchise.
Every time I watch “Attack of the Clones,” I can’t help but think about the advice Ewan McGregor offered Daniel Logan, who played young Obi-Wan Kenobi. This connection between the two Jedi Masters adds an interesting layer to the Star Wars saga that I find fascinating.
