At the 2025 Oscars, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo celebrated triumphantly following a well-received opening act, while Conan O’Brien playfully attempted to snatch Adrien Brody’s Oscar. These unbroadcasted moments from the event were skillfully captured by John Shearer, who served as an in-house, all-access photographer for both the Academy and Getty Images this year, capturing numerous other intriguing scenes as well.
She explained to The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, just hours after the Oscars’ excitement had subsided, that she prefers to blend unnoticed among the stars. She doesn’t want them to suspect a photographer or media presence in the room or dressing room because once they do, everything shifts. Instead, she aims to be an unobtrusive observer, not disturbing anyone or even revealing her presence. Her goal is for people to feel as if they were experiencing the moment alongside her.
Shearer has attended numerous award shows in the past, jokingly stating that he’s missed out on only this particular event. Among his previous accolades are the SAG Awards, Grammys, and CMA Awards. This seasoned photographer is also renowned for creating one of the most famous pop culture images from last year – the poster for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour film.
For Shearer, the standout images from the evening featured Grande and Erivo of Wicked. He mentions that his wife was involved in Victorious, the Nickelodeon series where Grande made her acting debut. “I’m captivated by the photos of them with their glam squad, readying themselves for the stage mere minutes before the show, and then witnessing the enthusiasm and everything that transpired after the performance as they dashed to their dressing rooms,” he expressed.
