The final episode of Cobra Kai has concluded, but the legacy and characters from this franchise, originating from Ralph Macchio’s memorable 1984 film, will continue to thrive. First, the long-awaited movie Karate Kid: Legends is set for release on May 30. Additionally, rumors swirl about a spinoff series centering around some of the Cobra Kai teenagers. Among these young actors, one that left an indelible mark was Eli Moskowitz, also known as “Hawk” because of his distinctive mohawks. Hawk’s character captivated every scene he appeared in, played with panache, intensity, and charisma by the promising actor Jacob Bertrand. Recently, MovieWeb spoke to Bertrand to gauge his interest in reprising his role as Hawk in a potential future project.
Bertrand mentioned that if there was a spinoff for Hawk in Cobra Kai, he believes it would involve the theme of brotherhood and he’s excited to work with Gianni [DeCenzo] again. He appreciates working with him and considers him like a little brother. If Gianni is involved, he’d be all in and might even collaborate with Xolo, Peyton, Tanner, or Mary as well.
Bertrand has had numerous opportunities to showcase his karate skills across the six seasons of Cobra Kai. This series, initially aired on YouTube Red, later shifted to Netflix. In an open and amusing conversation, he discussed his prior experience in karate before joining the successful television program:
In my audition for the role, I portrayed myself as a master of karate. However, my experience in this field was limited to a few years of learning karate at a small mall when I was just a kid. By the time I landed the role at 17, I had forgotten almost everything I learned. So, while I technically had a blue belt, it was when I was only nine years old. Honestly, I’m not sure if that really counts as significant training. I don’t want to undermine the achievements of all those other blue-belt nine-year-olds out there, but my karate skills were far from exceptional at the time.
“It Felt Like I Won”
Cobra Kai abounds with thrilling showdowns on the mat during the many tournaments where high school students fight for karate supremacy. Bertrand shared his opinions about which episodes of the series he particularly enjoyed, reflecting on the overall success of this notable production.
Bertrand shared that Season 3 was particularly engaging for him as he portrayed Hawk at his most troubled point. Hawk was deeply embracing the idea of ‘I am Cobra Kai now, this is my life. I will be ruthless, cause chaos, and attack without mercy.’ This character arc was exciting for Bertrand to explore.
In my opinion, Seasons 2 and 3 are my top picks. The excitement of winning the tournament was indescribable! There were hundreds of extras cheering us on. Tanner and I squared off, bare-chested in front of a massive crowd… On that day, I was allowed to emerge victorious, and it was thrilling to hoist the trophy high while people went wild… To put it simply, that moment was incredibly enjoyable, tough to top… It seemed as if I had actually won. Although the fight was choreographed, it felt like I outsmarted him and triumphed through my own determination.
