If someone had mentioned David Arquette would be in a Scream movie some years back, I’d have replied with something like “Of course! He’s Deputy Dewey Riley!” However, in the 2022 version of Scream, the iconic character from the horror series met an brutal end at the hands of Mikey Madison, who portrayed a new Ghostface persona alongside Jack Quaid. Now, there’s news suggesting that Arquette will return to Woodsboro once more.
Thrilled as I am to learn that my beloved Scream character is returning, I find myself brimming with curiosity regarding one of the most eagerly awaited forthcoming horror films on the horizon.
I Was Heartbroken Scream Killed Off Dewey, So Thank Goodness He’s Back
Initially, reading about David Arquette reuniting with Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and others for the upcoming “Scream” film in 2026 filled me with enthusiasm. However, when Dewey’s demise occurred in the 2022 movie, I was disheartened to see such a beloved character from the original series being written off, given his enduring legacy within the franchise.
In a gruesome turn of events, Dewey received two knife wounds – one at the front of his body and another at the back, causing him immense pain. His heart-wrenching demise served as a catalyst for Gale and Sidney to unite powerfully in the third act, determined to bring down Ghostface. Arquette expressed his affection for how his character’s death was portrayed, despite feeling sad about departing from the story.
To put it simply, the absence of Dewey in Scream 6 felt off. It’s no surprise that they’re planning to reintroduce him, along with Stu (the original Ghostface killer played by Matthew Lillard) and Scott Foley’s character Roman Bridger (Sidney’s brother who was also a Ghostface). However, I’m curious about how they plan on incorporating these characters into the new film.
But, How Exactly Is Scream 7 Going To Pull This Off?
I’m open to the idea of Dewey rejoining the cast for the next Scream film, but I’m struggling to see how the series might realistically revive his character. After considering various scenarios, there are three possibilities that seem plausible about these deceased characters making a comeback:
1. They were never actually dead and have been hiding or faking their deaths.
2. The writers will find an innovative way to bring them back through time travel, parallel universes, or other fantastical means.
3. The franchise might take a more somber approach by revealing that these characters are now ghosts or hallucinations, haunting the new generation of victims.
One possibility for rephrasing the given text could be:
Is it possible that the upcoming movie will involve an unusual supernatural storyline, where the new Ghostface resurrects characters from the original killer’s past? Another idea could be that Dewey and his team appear in dreams or hallucinations triggered by the actions of the new Ghostface. Alternatively, the film might be set in the past, before Dewey’s death, although this seems less likely given that Sidney’s daughter has been cast in the movie.
Although the specific details of the storyline for Scream 7 are being kept secret, what we do know is that it has been penned by the writers behind the most recent Scream films and will be helmed by the creator of the original series, Kevin Williamson. I have faith they’re concocting something intriguing with Ghostface in tow, and I’m thrilled to learn Dewey will make a return appearance. However, I can’t help but feel a bit apprehensive that we might be witnessing the goofiest or most mind-bending Scream film yet.
