At the 97th Academy Awards in 2025, Andrew Garfield‘s heartfelt tribute to Goldie Hawn on behalf of his mother unexpectedly added delight and suspense to the television lineup. Although the scene was as touching as some of the Oscars victories or the reunion between Jesse Eisenberg and Garfield in The Social Network, Oliver Hudson’s reaction to his mom during the exchange added an extra dimension. He expressed worry that his mother might prefer Garfield over him after the public gesture, and Goldie Hawn’s response was nothing short of amazing.
Hudson took to his Instagram to shout out The Amazing Spider-Man star’s lovely message about Hawn and his own mother’s love for her. However, he also voiced his concern for whom the Death Becomes Her star would favor after the televised praising, especially since she hadn’t responded to his texts. He shared:
This movie left me feeling incredibly moved and surprised. Andru, that performance was simply stunning. It made me cry, laugh, feel a swell of pride, and then worry that my mom might love Andrew Garfield more than she loves me… I’m still trying to figure out where I stand on this. She hasn’t responded to my texts yet… @goldiehawn
A delightful and amusing tribute to the Hacksaw Ridge actor, who paid tribute on stage to the legacy of Hawn. Throughout her career and family life, she has achieved nothing less than Hollywood greatness. It was heartwarming to witness this tribute presented in such an authentic manner.
To clarify, it’s important to mention that this isn’t the only occasion the British actor has trended on social media for his antics during an awards show in 2021; wearing glasses at the Golden Globes caused quite a stir. However, the heartwarming and amusing incident with Goldie Hawn (and her son) takes the cake in terms of popularity.
I’m sorry I didn’t answer your texts honey, I was talking to Andrew!!!
Ten out of ten comment by the Overboard star!
I’m really looking forward to watching these three collaborate on something amusing, as their humor is just as witty and entertaining as this year’s Oscar opening monologue. Fingers crossed that if Hudson or Garfield decide to extend the joke, it happens in a public space, similar to the Scream Queens actor’s recent quips (although it’s not necessary since Hawn has already done an excellent job).
Now that they’ve wrapped up their Academy Awards duties and created an unexpectedly cute duo, here’s hoping they collaborate on a project again soon. Goldie Hawn has a holiday-themed comedy in development with Diane Keaton and Bette Midler, and it wouldn’t be far-fetched for the Tick, Tick…Boom star to join her, potentially playing her onscreen son and extending the Oscar excitement.
On my side, I’m really hoping and wishing for it, but it appears he might be quite occupied for the following two years due to his schedule. Although it’s still just a rumor at this stage, there’s certainly a lot of excitement surrounding Garfield possibly appearing in Avengers: Secret Wars. Until more details emerge about that, he has several ongoing projects, one of which is the thriller film After the Hunt, where he co-stars with Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, and Chloe Sevigny.
Goldie Hawn’s strong reaction to Oliver Hudson’s playful jabs was unwavering, making their exchange a memorable highlight at the Oscars, which she shared with Andrew Garfield, cementing it as a truly iconic moment on stage.
