Inside Mr.’s First Solo Exhibition in Los Angeles

Approximately ten years following the initial institutional display of Mr.’s work on the West Coast, the renowned Japanese Superflat artist came back to the United States with his latest exhibition titled “IT WAS ON A BRILLIANT DAY.” This marked the first solo show by him in Los Angeles.

As a gamer, I’d describe his artistic style as a whirlwind of unique chaos, much like the bustling maze of Don Quijote stores in Japan. It’s a place where you can get lost amidst an overwhelming array of goods, each one more intriguing than the last. His art mirrors the vibrant, cluttered, and diverse consumer culture of Japan, drawing inspiration from the urban jungle teeming with mass-produced treasures.

Mr.’s artwork, with its anime-inspired portrayals of boys and girls, conceals a more profound examination of escapism that is influenced by his challenging upbringing within his family. This personal history is mirrored in the isolated and imaginative realms he constructs through his creative output. The most recent exhibition showcases Mr.’s current work across diverse mediums, including large paintings, vinyl sculptures, and massive-scale installations that replicate sections of his artistic workspace.

On a splendid day, the exhibition is now available for viewing at Perrotin LA, and will remain accessible to the public until March 29, 2025.
