Ving Rhames & Luiii Reveal Their Top Boxing Movies You Can’t Miss!

Following a break from the triumphs of popular action fight films such as “Unstoppable” and “The Fire Inside”, Hollywood presents another enticing boxing tale titled “Uppercut“. This film is now accessible to all audiences. The German actress, known as “Luiii“, embodies a dedicated fighter, guided by a seasoned coach played by the prestigious Golden Globe-winner, Ving Rhames (famous for his roles in “Mission: Impossible” and “Pulp Fiction”). Recently, these two stars spoke to MovieWeb about their latest small-yet-powerful drama production, also revealing some of their preferred boxing movies prior to “Uppercut“.

Over time, one movie that particularly stood out for me has been “Raging Bull” due to its deep exploration of the characters, rather than just the impressive boxing matches it featured. What truly captivated me was getting to know Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci as individuals, rather than their boxing personas.

Speaking from my point of view, I consider “Million Dollar Baby” to be an iconic movie. What makes it even more appealing to me is that it features a powerful female protagonist, and the story revolves around her. Continuing on the topic of standout sports films, I find “Uppercut” particularly unique.

In today’s context, this story features an assertive female protagonist that many of us appreciate. Some might find her intense or even irritating at times, but I believe she’s intended to be just that way. She needs to stand out, and she doesn’t back down when faced with obstacles. Instead, she keeps pushing forward, determined to achieve her goals. I think this fearless spirit can serve as an inspiration, particularly for young women.

Tackling “Character-Driven Stories”

Prior to her acting career, Luiii had a background in an industry that aligns with her current project. She shared with us that she was a professional athlete up until she turned 18, which means she stopped over a decade ago. However, she also expressed a keen interest in character-driven stories and moving audiences deeply. Yet, she didn’t rule out the possibility of starring in an action movie if it were exceptional.

In the movie “Uppercut”, Luiii and Rhames share compelling moments of tough love throughout the film, and Luiii discussed the process behind creating that authenticity. She explained, “We had deep conversations, not just during filming, but also off-set, which allowed us to improvise genuinely.” For her, these improvised scenes were the most genuine because, as she put it, “What we were saying, there was a natural bond between us.

Lastly, the actress shared her preferred moments between the player and coach from the project outcome that she found particularly special: “The locker room scenes, as I feel they are incredibly intimate due to their personal nature, and the space is surprisingly confined. It’s almost like we were isolated in this minuscule room just the two of us.

From Lionsgate, Uppercut is now available in theaters, on demand and on digital.
