Lanterns Teases Sinestro Corps and Guardians, But the Villains Could Steal the Show

As a fan eagerly anticipating the revival of the Green Lantern universe after my initial disappointment with the 2011 film, I’m thrilled to learn that the small screen is now bringing this intriguing DC Comics lore to life through the series Lanterns. In this upcoming live-action production, Kyle Chandler portrays Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart, two characters who will encounter Poorna Jagannathan’s character Zoe, a potential love interest for John. During a recent interview, Jagannathan hinted that Zoe might cross paths with some formidable Green Lantern villains, which has me buzzing with excitement! The inclusion of the Guardians of the Universe is indeed significant, but it’s the tantalizing prospect of encountering these rogues that truly has my heart racing.

As Jagannathan promoted her latest series titled “Deli Boys“, now available for streaming via Hulu subscription, she also shared some insights about her upcoming DC TV show during a chat with @mpmorales. This upcoming series is set to follow the path of “Creature Commandos” Season 1 and “Peacemaker” Season 2 on the small screen of the DC Universe. Here’s what she had to share:

In a more simplified manner, I absolutely adore the script for Green Lantern! My character is skillfully developed, making my performance effortless. The script practically writes itself, allowing me to step aside and let Green Lantern shine. Each character is reminiscent of beloved figures yet distinct in their own right. The series masterfully portrays heroes and villains simultaneously, adding depth and intrigue to the storyline, making it complex, layered, and simply stunning.

As a movie enthusiast who had been pondering over the past few months about Lanterns‘ apparent distancing from its celestial origins, I’m thrilled to learn that the Guardians of the Universe are set to make an appearance in the series. These are the beings who fashioned and govern the Green Lantern Corps from their planet Oa. Their presence within Lanterns suggests either Hal and John will journey to Oa at some point during the series, or they’ll interact with these diminutive yet powerful blue-skinned aliens using their rings of indomitable willpower.

To clarify, it seems significant that Poorna Jagannathan referred to “Sinestros” instead of just “Sinestro”. Given that we know Ulrich Thomsen plays Sinestro in “Lanterns”, it’s possible she simply misspelled his name. However, considering the context and hoping for the best, it could be hinting at the introduction of the Sinestro Corps. In the comics, after years of wielding yellow fear energy alone, Sinestro eventually formed a team of Yellow Lanterns in the mid-2000s – the Sinestro Corps.

If we’re going to encounter some of Sinestro’s followers in the Lanterns, I’m really looking forward to seeing Hal Jordan and John Stewart engage in a battle with their yellow-clad foes. The connection between the Sinestro Corps and the murder that the Green Lanterns are investigating in the heartland of America is now more intriguing than ever. Are they the ones responsible, or is the real culprit so dangerous that even the Yellow Lanterns are under threat?

You’ll have to wait a while since the show “Lanterns” won’t premiere on HBO until early 2026. However, with the Guardians of the Universe and potentially the Sinestro Corps set to make an appearance, my anticipation for this DCU series just keeps growing.
