Hey now, all-stars – y’all gotta chill about Shrek 5.
After getting that joke out of my system, there’s been plenty of discussion about the upcoming fifth installment of the Shrek series. For quite some time now, these movies have had a significant impact on audiences. Even though the last major Shrek film came out fifteen years ago, the franchise has continued to gain popularity over the years.
That’s right.
Fifteen. Years.
Betcha didn’t expect to feel old today, huh?
Besides that tidbit, a fresh Shrek movie is due for release in 2026, ending years of anticipation. To be honest, I would have preferred it to hit theaters in 2025’s lineup, but after catching a glimpse of the upcoming film, I can’t help but ponder if it might require an extra bit of time before it’s ready.
Allow me to share some excitement with fellow cinema enthusiasts! Contrary to any apprehensions, let me assure you that Shrek 5 is not destined for a disappointing run. So, let’s all take a moment, inhale deeply, and align our thoughts – because the latest installment of Shrek seems to be speeding towards becoming an exceptional film!
I’ve Waited Years For A New Shrek Movie, So I’m Down For Anything
To begin with, it’s important to clarify that I’m not merely an admirer, but rather a passionate fan of the Shrek movies. They hold a special place in my heart, as they were practically part of my childhood upbringing – a sentiment shared by many from my generation. Over the past 15 years or so, I’ve kept up with the memes and other cultural developments related to these films.
Shrek was among the DreamWorks Animation films that surprised audiences upon release due to its unique approach. Instead of following the conventional fairy tale narrative, it poked fun at the entire genre by transforming Disney’s classic princess tales into a humorous parody. This fresh take proved successful, leading to a decade-long series of films.
Among these animated movies, the first two Shrek films are particularly well-liked, and while some might argue that the third one is the weakest, I don’t find it entirely terrible. The fourth film isn’t as bad as some people say either. As for Puss in Boots, it’s decent, but the sequel, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, truly stands out as a cinematic gem. These movies have carved out a special niche in my memory.
Regarding whether it’s good or not is still unknown, but considering my fondness for this series, even if it’s not great, the initial glimpse at Shrek 5 doesn’t appear terrible.

The Animation Isn’t Bad – It’s Just Changed Immensely. It’s Been Fifteen Years Since The Last Film
Y’all, the animation is not that bad for Shrek 5.
At a quick observation, they may seem unusual or unfamiliar due to their distinct features. I won’t deceive you by claiming they are identical, as they clearly have differences in aspects such as hairstyle, eye color, and mannerisms.
However, it’s important to note that the most recent film was launched fifteen years back, with the first one coming out twenty-four years ago. The world of animation has undergone significant changes during this period, particularly in the last fifteen years.
Disney mainly transitioned to 3-dimensional animation and produced stunning masterpieces in the field (though there are some less impressive ones, but they often get overlooked). Pixar has been consistently pushing the boundaries of technology. Over time, other animation studios have emerged and offered their unique takes on 3D animation.
Over the past fifteen years, DreamWorks has seen entire series rise and fall, such as the “How to Train Your Dragon” film series, significantly shaping their animation output.
Without a doubt, the appearance of the animation will vary. After all, it’s an entirely fresh system, a brand-new approach to creation, and it requires some adjustment to become accustomed to.

Let’s Not Even Get Into How This Is Just A First Look, Not Even A Full Trailer
While this animated film is fresh and innovative, some might initially question its visual appeal. Yet, I encourage viewers to give it a chance, as the quality of animation can often improve significantly as the story unfolds.
Alright, and here we have an initial glimpse. It’s not as extensive as the full trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog release that necessitated a complete overhaul. Instead, this is merely a brief teaser. With over a year and a half until the movie hits theaters, who knows what changes may occur?
The final appearance of the animation might be significantly altered when the movie is released, yet there seems to be a general impression that it’s due out imminently.

Movies In The Shrek Franchise Have Gotten A Redesign Before, And People Loved It
It’s also worth mentioning that while this seems like a total revamp of the Shrek animation, it’s important to note that the franchise has tackled similar changes in the past.
Previously mentioned, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” is often hailed as one of the finest productions by DreamWorks Animation. It boasts an exceptionally well-crafted villain among its roster of DreamWorks characters. The narrative is captivating. Furthermore, it employs a unique animation style compared to previous “Shrek” films, and it’s visually stunning.
The brief glimpse we’ve seen so far isn’t quite on par with that outstanding movie yet – we simply haven’t had enough sneak peeks to fully grasp the plot of this film. However, we loved “The Last Wish” and appreciated the animation. So, I’m just suggesting that we give it a chance or at least allow the studio some additional time before making a final judgment.

Let’s All Take A Deep Breath And Let DreamWorks Cook
Guys. This is DreamWorks we are talking about.
To put it simply, this studio seldom misses the mark when it comes to animation. There are exceptions, such as the Boss Baby series (goodness knows), but generally speaking, its animation is consistently jaw-dropping, regardless of the plot. Even their lesser-known recent project, Orion and the Dark, boasts impressive animation.
Despite being labeled as a mere overhyped musical production, the Trolls franchise boasts impressive animation and enjoyable scenes.
Or:
Though some people might call it an overblown musical, the Trolls series still delivers on stunning visuals and entertaining moments.
For the past fifteen years, we’ve enjoyed both the “How To Train Your Dragon” and “Kung Fu Panda” series, each boasting exceptional animation quality. Can they possibly disappoint with their flagship animated production?
It seems almost impossible for them to botch this terribly, and I’m confident that if we give DreamWorks Animation the freedom to work their magic, we’ll be pleasantly astonished by the results.
Until then, let’s try not to be overly concerned with the appearance of a fictional green ogre or the responses of a speaking donkey. These characters are part of a make-believe world, and we are merely spectators. I’m excited to discover how this film unfolds, regardless of the initial reactions from the audience.
