The acceptability, necessity, and explicitness of sex scenes in Hollywood films have evolved significantly over time, ranging from being nearly absent in early cinema to a common element in many mature movies since the 1970s. In the concluding scene of Lost Highway, I recall being required to act in a love scene with Balthazar Getty, both of us being in our natural state, outside a cabin that was about to catch fire. The crew repeatedly warned, ‘Closed set, there will be nudity,’ and suggested we leave if not needed for the particular segment.

In simpler terms, “They repeatedly told me something, yet there were many people on set. Wearing a robe, I warned them, ‘Listen, I’d like to share something. As soon as I remove this robe, if I find you still here when I turn around, and I know you shouldn’t be, I’ll walk over and hit you in the face.’ This resulted in about 15 people quickly leaving. It seems people can be inconsiderate at times. That’s all I could express!

During the 1970s, exploitative films featuring explicit sexual content dominated adult movie theaters. This trend evolved into erotic thrillers in the 1980s and 1990s, with movies like “9 ½ Weeks” and “Basic Instinct” pushing the boundaries of what was considered acceptable on the silver screen. In more recent times, TV programs such as “Game of Thrones”, “365 Days”, and “Sex/Life” have pushed the envelope even further, leading some to wonder if nudity on-screen serves a purpose or is merely used for sensationalism. However, Arquette, despite expressing discomfort with nudity, acknowledges that at times, intimate scenes are necessary.

As a movie enthusiast, I acknowledge the significant and impactful role that sexuality plays in people’s lives. It shapes their feelings of love, desire, ambition for power, or even the urge to exert control over others. In various aspects of life, sexuality seems to be a crucial determining factor.

The actress finds it gratifying that intimacy coordinators have entered the film industry, a position she wholeheartedly endorses. Moreover, she stated:

For quite some time, I’ve been spared from performing many intimate scenes. However, an upcoming project involves a bathtub scene, and they asked if I wanted an intimacy coordinator. Normally, I wouldn’t require one, but given my current feelings of vulnerability, I feel it would be beneficial. I appreciate that there are now intimacy coordinators available to ensure comfort and safety.
