I’m predicting that no future 2025 TV show will come close to matching the amount of fungal infections depicted in The Last of Us Season 2, given Pedro Pascal’s character Joel and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie are survivors in a world decimated by cordyceps fungus. This prediction is not overly bold, considering the horror drama’s dangers will be more lethal than ever before, as the HBO series plans to incorporate the video game’s spore clouds into the plotline.

The captivating scene of live-action spores is showcased in the complete Season 2 trailer presented at the SXSW panel in Austin. Co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, along with the cast, graced the stage to excite fans by hinting at the emotional turmoil coming up. Notably, Mazin employed the term “escalation” when discussing the second season’s infected threats, stating that it’s not merely about increasing the quantity and variety, but also about making their influence on the survivors’ narratives as impactful as possible.
Following Mazin expressing concerns about pushing too far ahead, given at least one more season in development (and possibly more), Druckmann connected the increasing tension to the appearance of spores. He also offered some behind-the-scenes knowledge on why the creative team chose to introduce these elements during Season 2 rather than earlier. Here’s a conversation between them:
Or, even simpler:
Mazin expressed concerns about moving too fast with another season in sight. Druckmann linked this escalation to spores and explained why they delayed showing them until Season 2. Their exchange follows:
- NEIL DRUCKMANN: Yeah, there’s an escalation of numbers and types of infected. But also, as you see in the trailer, an escalation of the vector of how this thing spreads. You know, Season 1, we had this new thing that wasn’t in the game of these tendrils that spread, and that was one form. And then one shot you see in this trailer, there are things in the air.
- CRAIG MAZIN: S’mores…
- NEIL DRUCKMAN: Rhymes with…
- CRAIG MAZIN: Spores. Yes, they’re back. They’re back. Spores are back. Scattered spores, fans! Get it.
- NEIL DRUCKMANN: And the reason [we’re doing it now], I mean, we really wanted to figure it out, and again, everything has to be drama. There had to be a dramatic reason of introducing it now. And there is.
It seems reminiscent of how the gruesomely advanced Bloater wasn’t introduced until Episode 5 in Season 1, once Kathleen’s militia had built up a sufficient body count to warrant its appearance. There was no need for the additional expense and effort of creating spores visuals for a scene that could function equally well without them. However, it’s also worth considering…

I Think I Know How The Last Of Us Will Introduce Spores In Season 2
In much the same vein as my initial prediction, I’m confident that we can approach The Last of Us’ second season with the confidence that the TV series will incorporate spores into the narrative, specifically in the sequence where they play a significant role from a storytelling perspective rather than merely serving to enhance the game’s eerie atmosphere. This is a sequence that gamers are well-acquainted with.
If you haven’t experienced the game yet, I’ll avoid giving away too much, but let me tell you that Ellie and Dina, portrayed by Isabela Merced, are significant characters in the story. Given the upcoming video game adaptation, it seems likely that this crucial scene will stay true to the original, as altering it might be difficult given its impact on the narrative. Their chemistry is vital in this scene, and it serves as a turning point for the storyline.
Instead of directly altering the game events, Mazin and Druckmann have primarily enriched the universe with additional depth and concepts since the initial game’s release in 2013. The episode “Long, Long Time,” which earned guest star Nick Offerman a Primetime Emmy, demonstrates how this TV series can take a small idea and transform it into something valuable.
Take a look at the extended Season 2 trailer unveiled at SXSW, and continue reading for a DETAILED SPOILER ANALYSIS of my forecast.
Everyone who’s still reading is aware of what happens in the game, right? Good.
The most memorable instance related to spores in the game unfolds when Dina and Ellie find themselves battling for survival in a devastated subway network. Following their defeat of an assailant targeting Ellie, Dina notices a flaw in her companion’s gas mask. In response, she takes off her own mask, which causes Ellie to abruptly shout at her to halt. Though they couldn’t discuss it immediately due to the urgent situation, this is the point where Dina realizes that Ellie is resistant to the infection because of her immunity.
Isabela Mercado hinted at sharing one significant scene on everyone’s social media once it’s released for broadcast, though it’s unclear if the ‘spores’ sequence is the one she meant. However, the writers might have devised a method to amplify the tension even more during the revelation scene.
It’s quite plausible that my earlier suppositions could be wrong, allowing “The Last of Us” to take an unexpected route when introducing spores in Season 2. However, such a shift might necessitate altering Ellie’s revelation to Dina, which seems unlikely given Mazin and Druckmann’s preference for maintaining the established setup.
In my opinion as a movie reviewer, it’s important to clarify that neither Mazin nor Druckmann is introducing spores as a brand new danger for the survivors in this world. Instead, it seems that everyone, including Dina, is well aware of the lethal nature of spore clouds. This knowledge avoids any potential plot twists where characters blunder into deadly situations unknowingly.
As you eagerly anticipate the release of Season 2 on HBO, scheduled for April 13, 2025, don’t forget to refresh your memory with Season 1 by subscribing to Max. Also, ensure that your gas masks are in top condition.
